A Question For Mass Communications Majors (Or People Who Know The Mass Comm Major)

My dilemma involves being qualified for the GPA of Mass Comm by the time I apply (Spring 2009). Right now I am a 2nd year and I am concerned if I will make the 3.2 GPA deadline by next spring. This is what my course prerequisites look like so far:

History 17B: Taking at CC currently during Summer 2008 (A or B)
Poli Sci 1: Took during Spring 2008, received a C+
Intro Social Studies Requirement: Took Econ 1 during Fall 2007 for business major, received B-; taking equivalent of Psych 1 at CC right now (Summer 2008) (most likely an A)
Mass Comm 10: Taking this Fall 2008
Elective Course For Major: Took Journ 141 during Spring 2008, received a B-

Right now I’m wondering if I still have a shot at the 3.2 GPA so that I can avoid the long form application. Please help me answer my questions below and I appreciate any info that I receive.

My list of questions (I appreciate if you can answer all, if any, of these):

 1. Do CC classes for prerequisites count toward the Mass Comm major GPA of 3.2?

If CC classes don’t count and I have to do the long form application, will the fact that some of their prerequisites were not considered for their GPA be considered by the people who review the long form applications?

For the Intro Social Studies Requirement, will I be able to choose which course I want to use for the requirement (Psych over Econ), or will they choose the best one for me, or will they factor both into the GPA?

To help boost my GPA, can I take more than one course in a category and have them all considered for my GPA (for example: taking Sociology 1 in the Fall to build my GPA and have it as well as Psych 1 [& possibly Econ 1] into my GPA)?

This question is kind of specific, but would it be advisable to take Sociology 5 this Fall with Nasatir (anybody know anything on him) to try to raise my GPA because classes required for the major that are not prerequisites for admission are considered into the GPA?

Should I consider taking another course not considered for application to mass comm major (elective course for major) to help boost my GPA?

How often do people who fill out the long term application get accepted into the major? Does it depend on how many people apply for the major that semester/year and how many students are already in the major?

Sorry for all the questions, but it has been tough finding the answers to them. Thanks to anyone who answers.

I can't really answer your questions, but I just wanted to say that I am sort of in the same situation as you. I desire to get into the ever-so prestigious Haas business school, but so far, my grades aren't agreeing with me so I'm attempting to have Mass Comm as a back-up (meaning most likely the major I'll end up with).

As for your CC classes, the only way that I think they can transfer over is if you "Bring your transcripts and a copy of your college catalog to Jean Retzinger, the faculty advisor, to have your coursework approved for use in the major."

Sorry for not being much of a help, but I'm interested in some of the answers to your questions as well. Any Mass Comm majors out there?
