communications major - help!

hi, i'm a freshman and undeclared, but i recently realized that i really, really, really want to be a comm studies major. i went to the info session last week and let's just say that that pretty much freaked me out.. one of the admissions ladies emphasized that GPA and course selection were basically all they looked for. my physics (and possibly calc) grade this quarter is definitely going to drop my GPA from a 3.76 to a ~3.5 and... i'm worried this will kill my chances of getting in.

my question is-
if i take comm10 and anthro33 next quarter, do fairly well (as in A or A-) and bump my GPA a little higher, will the admissions committee even consider me?

also, if i don't get in as an incoming sophomore, can someone please advise on what kinds of classes i should take next year? it seems like if i don't have a major by this year, i'm just going to be taking random GE classes for most of next year...

please help :( i'm going crazy trying to figure all of this out.

Most people don't get into comm as sophomores, so if you don't, don't let it freak you out. It's actually really rare to find a declared 2nd year comm major. The gpa range for comm is usually between 3.75 and 4, with the higher the better (since your chances are directly affected by the applicant pool, the higher the gpa, the more competitive you are). I know some anomalies who have gotten in with less, but that's rare. So yeah, even if you can't get your gpa up by the end of spring, you should be fine for next year if all goes well.

GPA and course selection are definitely the important (and I'd suggest the only) factors that are considered for admission. Get the GPA as high as you can, get as many of the 7 pre-reqs done as you can, and you should be ok. Also any expressed interest in a comm related field (so internships or ECs) will help, too. If you're positive that you want to do comm, take the pre-req GEs next year. It's wise to choose GEs that overlap with your second choice major (so do psych 10 if youre considering a psych major, for instance) because you don't want to be screwed if at the end of 2nd year you're not accepted.

Don't let it stress you out. Follow the guidelines and just get it done with high grades, you should be fine.

Also, I'm sure you've heard this, but comm 10 is a hardcore weeder. The material itself isn't hard but I've heard that the tests are graded harshly and I know that the curve is pretty serious. Don't let it dissuade you, just realize that you need it for comm (a good grade in comm 10 seems to be an auto-in for the major, but that's just speculation on my part) and do well.

applications for next year start april 1st!

Hey, I'm actually a comm 2nd year, and I got a B in Comm 10 (it's an evil class). I took science and math classes thinking I was going to be a south campus major, but the math class screwed my GPA a little (lower than 3.6) but I was still accepted, so don't worry too much! Try to do well in your lower div's for comm. When I went to the informational meeting for the application, they said they wouldn't like it if you finished like...all 7 of the lower divs. They only want you to take about 4, because in the case you don't get in it was sort of a waste of time.

allie, thanks so much for the fast reply!!!! it cleared up a lot of things for me.

(also, hi grace)

That's definitely true (re: not taking all of the GEs), but i'd definitely suggest to err on the side of more rather than less. Have a backup plan, but commit yourself to comm if comm is what you want. They're less likely to reject you if you have more lower divs done than if you don't have enough.

thanks to cocoa too-
i'm hoping they'll take the south campus-ness of this quarter into account.. :|

They will. Your GPA in the lower divs matters more than your overall GPA.
