I am planning to apply to the Communication: Journalism major. I am going to be a Sophomore as of Autumn 2011. On the website it says that a cumulative GPA under a 2.5 will not be accepted. My overall GPA is far above that, but I do have a couple of Econ courses that I took when I wanted to ally to Foster that are both a 2.4 (obviously I don't like Econ all that much). I haven't taken COM 201 yet and I'm sure that is a huge consideration factor. All of my grades except for the Econs are about 3.0 even some above 3.5. I'm just hoping cumulative means overall. So, if I manage to do really really well in COM 201, what do you my chances will be?

Just show a strong grade trend, keep showing a good pre-req GPA, and make sure to write a great personal statement. Yes, cumulative GPA means overall. Also, just wondering, who were your Econ 200/201 instructors?

The com department (general and journalism) is highly competitive. I have a friend with a 3.2 that didn’t get in. I did get in (but my cum gpa is also much much higher). (ironically (?) I plan on dropping that major soon).

BTW com 201 is easy and if you’re taking it with Beam: he’s a really nice guy but super super boring. at least you can watch the videocasts. The quiz sections and assigned homework are pretty boring.

For both courses it was Haideh Salihi Esfahani. I honestly didn’t enjoy her the first time around, but when I had to take econ 201, hers was the only section open when I came to register.

I’ll keep that in mind when I come to register for it! Thanks!
Well can you tell me a little more about what I should be doing at the moment? you know, to improve my chances a bit?

and is it ok if you tell me what grade your friend received on COM 201?

I honestly don’t know what his grade was for 201… he had told me “pretty good” when I had asked, but that’s subjective

I say, try your best…you never know and it doesn’t hurt to try
if you have Bean and you put in only 1/2 the effort you’ll do well. (I missed many classes, watching the video casts instead, and didn’t do all of the readings and still got a 3.8 in it). so that’ll at least help your chances (if you have him).
