A question, pardon the ignornance

When one wants to write a college essay, does one write an essay about anything, or does one have to look at a colleges website for college essay topics?

Please excuse my ignorance in the subject.

Look at the college websites/common application to find out the essay questions for the colleges you’re applying to.

You can write your common application essay about anything (if you choose), but colleges generally have specific prompts for their own application essays.

Eh, go to the CommonApp website and register an account. Many colleges (there is a list on the website) support electronic applications done through CommonApp. Just do all the generic questions CommonApp asks for and the supplements that are specific to each college. All the questions are listed there.

If the college does not support CommonApp, chances are they still support e-applications. Just go to their website and click under the Admissions tab – you will find more info there. (Most, if not all, have downloadable .pdf files regarding application instructions too.)
