So how can I make my resume into an A++?
How long should the resume be? and what information should I put on my resume?
Resumes should never exceed one page unless your involved in academia or science, but that’s long into your career.
General rule of thumb is to never exceed one page. Include academics and award at the very top. Middle section should be professional experience followed by extracurricular activities.
There are many templates available if you search online. Organization, aesthetic, and attention to grammar is paramount.
Why do you need a resume as an entering freshman? Are you talking about a professional resume or do you want to make a resume for a high school student for college applications?
Are you talking about your resume or your child’s?
@BrownParent a resume for college application and some job soon or later.
@Coste hmm, mine is about 2 pages, so I’m guessing that’s too much?
For a job application do not list your high school GPA, your high school clubs/sports, college clubs/sports, extracurriculars, community service. (you can list your college GPA if it is very high i.e. over a 3.6, otherwise it is unnecessary). If you have worked many jobs to the point that it is making your resume too long, remove being a nanny/tutor and that pizza job you worked when you were younger.
Your resume should be: relevant skills to the college/job you are applying for listed in bullet points. Do not list over 5 bullets as it is excessive. Work experience. Internship experience. Education. If needed and you can do so while still making your resume neat and legible then do make the font smaller, margins wider, shorten job descriptions, remove irrelevant information, to cut it down to 1 - 1.5 pages.
When applying for jobs, if your extracurriculars are relevant to the job, then describe them in your cover letter separate from your resume i.e. applying for a sports marketing job – I am a marketing major etc etc…and I was team captain of university baseball so I am very passionate about sports as well.
