A-Rod Plugs Columbia During Home Run Derby

A-Rod was interviewed during the MLB Home Run Derby and was asked about Lou Gehrig and passing him on the all-time home run list. In talking about Gehrig's accomplishments, A-Rod mentions out of the blue (8:48 EDT, in case anyone is Tivo-ing it) that Gehrig went to Columbia. Rare that Columbia gets mentioned on a major sports broadcast.

Represent.

on a related note, newsweek has a long interview with barack obama but never mentions columbia, only harvard law

Does anyone mention the community college he went to? haha

First of all, it was Occidental College.

And how would I be dissing Obama by saying that? So essentially - point being, numbskull? I was showing that the media is selective with what they say.

You really have to try to stop finding every possible avenue to talk sht about me. And who are you to say that I can't beat Obama's success? Please grow up, man. Please.

I'll put 100 dollars on you not getting into Columbia.

And for the record, I love Obama.

occidental college is a pretty cool place, for a hippie school. one of my personal heroes, michael shermer, teaches there.

I posted on this before. Candidates themselves -- and the media -- always toot the H or Y name if they have it because it means more to the masses. Which do you hear more about -- that Bubba attended Yale or G'town? That Kerry attended Yale or BC? That Gore went to Harvard or Vandy?

And Obama LOATHED Columbia. He really didn't enjoy his time there...

where did u find this info? id like to see what he didnt like about it.

I read an interview with him once. He didn't like the administration at the time and his first night there he was locked out of his apartment because his landlady was out (He was a transfer so he wasn't guaranteed housing) and he spent the night in an alley, in the rain, which I don't think boded well for his CU career.

I heard that too from somewhere. But I've also read that he liked it.

I would say you're wrong that he LOATHED it etc etc a bit over the top there :)

But then again, I've also heard that he was really quiet, introverted, nerd, loser at Columbia. You either make the most of your experiences or you don't. Obama probably didn't.

"He was a transfer so he wasn't guaranteed housing"

Not true. Then again, it may have been different when he attended.

^I think he came in the middle of the year...

“Back in the Big Apple. Back in New York City. I love New York City!”

He went on to talk about his first night in New York, during which he “slept in an alley” days before starting classes as a transfer student at Columbia University.

“I was between Amsterdam and Columbus on 109th Street—I think it’s gentrified now, but it wasn’t back then,” he said. “And the person I was going to sublet from had said they were going to be there and they weren’t there and I had my luggage and folks were looking at me from the stoop. And eventually it got so late that I slept on my bags. And in the morning, there was a fire hydrant that was open and a homeless brother was washing his hands, and I washed my hands next to him, washed my face.” Pause. “And that was my first night in New York.”

Congratulations on the only mention of Columbia relating to sports!

oh, there are lots of mentions of columbia relating to sports. it's just that none of them are positive.

Both our fencing teams are near the top in the country, men's heavyweight crew was better this year than ever before with the freshmen team, football had the ivy league rookie of the year, women's soccer made the ncaa's for the first time, men's tennis made the ncaa's, etc. our sports teams are good!

this year our mens soccer better make NCAA and kick bumbum!

College athletic prowess is defined by: 1) Men's Football, and 2) Men's Basketball. Nothing else. Both these teams suck. It doesn't matter that they had the Ivy RoY for football.

Dont say hockey doesnt count, because it certainly does. College hockey is huge.
