so a few days ago I got an email from the cornell financial aid office saying they still needed my financial aid info, and that they extended the deadline.

my dad thinks that this email would only go out to students who were under serious consideration by admissions...maybe even the ones who have been accepted.

no, i think for all those who have checked off the box on the common app that says they will apply for financial aid, they request this info if they have not gotten it yet. I believe the financial aid office is separate from the admissions; after all, you send the financial aid stuff to a different address than the application materials.

Yeah, I got a similar letter in the mail today. It said they can't review my application until they receive the necessary financial aid forms. While I would like to believe it's a hint at an acceptance, I highly doubt it... I'm sure they're just requesting the necessary forms to create a financial aid profile.

i agree with your dad, lachicamorena. why would they calculate financial aids for students who aren't accepted? there are thousands of students who apply to cornell. calculating all those students' financial aid is not only useless/futile but also time-consuming.

and to those who have responded, do you guys know for sure? any supporting evidence? have you guys been accepted/rejected to say...?

My son got this a few days ago as well. I remember that it specifically said that if you wanted to be considered for financial aid that you should send in your fin aid info asap.

It also said that it was separate from admissions and should not be construed as a sign of admission... or along those lines.

I got this email too. At the end of the email, Cornell states that no further action is necessary if one does not wish to apply for financial aid.

i was deferred from cornell ED, but i have not submitted any 2006 financial info to cornell, except the fafsa, b/c i had already submitted the 2005 fin. info and the css profile during the early time period. do i still need to submit 2006 info before they make decisions or is 2005 enough? because assuming that financial aid email is a reminder for every applicant, they won't review the application until they received everything. btw, i did not receive the fin aid email.

Thank you BD89 - I forgot that ending - "no further action is necessary if you do not wish to apply for financial aid."

If you didn't get this letter, it probably just means that you submitted the info they needed to calculate your financial aid package. 2005 info is enough. If not, you file an amendment/adjustment by June or July if necessary. They will let you know.

I got the same letter, and I really doubt it is any kind of indication. Cornell admissions and FinAid are totally separated in order to keep the process "need-blind" so I am assuming FinAid has no idea about our decisions at this point, possibly ever; they may just send the info over to admissions and let them give the ones who are in the info.

Compiling all of the information is probably the most difficult part and they are going to get information from everyone who applies for aid. From there, the numbers probably just go into a program that spits out a package for each student. So calculating the aid isn't really that difficult.

Of course, I may be totally wrong (about any of that)! I would love to know that I'm in, but I think a likely letter is the only thing thats gonna tell us that this early.

i got the letter too....when they said they wont review your application until all materials are in...i think they meant financial aid application

jaynele... I used to think the same thing until an applicant to Penn ED was asked to resend fin aid apps 10 days before the decision came out... and still he got deferred.

oh wow i just made like the same post on the "financial aid" page. i got a letter about missing info too. i'm not too optimistic about this being a clue because while it is pretty much a waste of time for them to do everyone's fin aid, i dont think it would be too much a hassle for them to just send out info bout what forms are missing for everyone. they could just complete everyone's folders b4 the decision, and then when the decision comes either throw ur fin aid out or start looking at it
