A Stanford-related rumor out of Denver

"Outside the NFL, another intriguing place Fassel's name could surface is Stanford if the school decides to pull an early plug on (football coach) Walt Harris. Fassel, a former Denver offensive coordinator, has strong ties to Stanford.

He is credited with recruiting John Elway to the school, and he coached Elway during his reign on The Farm. Elway's backing, of course, goes a long way in Palo Alto, and Fassel could be on the short list if Harris finds himself in trouble."

0-4 is certainly frustrating for the nation's highest-paid football team.

I wouldn't mind Jim Fassel coaching here. Might turn the program around.

Hmmm .. things didn't seem to pick up in game five.

Ah well ... maybe they can get back on track against Notre Dame next week.

Although the score would suggest otherwise, the Stanford defense actually played valiantly and showed real signs of excitement and improvement (They actually forced the other team to punt for the first time this year, pressured the quarterback, and had an awesome goalline stand at the end of the first half.). Most of UCLA's scores were the result of mistakes by the offense -- another blocked punt, turnovers, etc. By the fourth quarter, with no help from the offense, the defense was just worn down. Apart from some consecutive first downs, the hapless offense was just plain pitiful. If Fassel comes, let's hope he brings an offensive line with him.

Shuffling the offensive line is Fassel's trademark.

"It may go game to game," he said. "We may not have an injury
this week and I might move guys next week for matchups, which is
highly unusual, very unorthodox. But we're at that point. I have to
be careful who is on who when they line up."

Cardinal football is definitely "at that point."
