Ok, I'm from chicago. Is there anyone on the board from Chicago that is going to Northwestern next year? Does anyone know how the random roomates go at Northwestern? Are most students happy with their roommates?

Somehow, I think the whole "random" roommate idea is more of a "pick people to go together who look like they might work well together based on first impressions and the surveys you fill out when you're doing housing". In other words, they often seem to match people based on race (although you won't hear any officials admit to that) and bedtimes, etc.

For the most part, roommates work out well. Every once in a while, some peoples' personalities just conflict, and you can talk to someone (i.e. your RA/CA) about moving to another dorm or rearranging rooms.

Surprises - fun? :o. alright then, but won't it be a bit irking to have someone who's a complete opposite, say in terms of neatness or volume or bedtimes? it's living together for an entire year, and most of us are too used to having our rooms to ourselves for the past 18 years.

I am looking forward to the surprise.. I think I'll be able to cope, since I live with my sister right now, and I already had to deal with an opposite roommate when I did a summer program.

yea, purrli good call about the opposites. But unless I inherit a psychological disorder out of thin air while filling out the roomie app I think I will be ok :D

the thing is, I want to meet as many new people as possible and rooming with a friend I already know isn't going to help that. Also, I don't exactly know the bed times/habits/cleanliness of my friends either so I'd rather not let that thing complicate a friendship and just see what NU deals me. I think I will be happy with whoever I room with because I hear NU does a good job unless you lie on the matching app.

I wouldn't want to room with a friend either - for the same reason as you said. Also because I dont have any friends going there :(. I was thinking 'non-random' as in sort of like a roommate match-making, pairing similar people up etc, such as I'd rather not have someone who's drunk all the time, heh.

I'm also going to a residential college, but haven't decided on which one yet. I don't think I'll want one of those tiny, 30-people ish ones though. Somehow it feels too small a pond. On the other hand, Willard felt a bit too large.

I think that the fact we have the fewest number of posts results from three things:

This subforum came much later than many of the other schools.

We all have Facebook and communicate there instead.

We have a life outside CC :-)

I'm not completely sure what dorm I'd like. I really want a residential college but none of them seem to fit me perfectly. Can you apply for res. halls and colleges at the same time? Here's the ones I like -

Allison: perfect but, not a res. college
CCI: I like the theme (I want to go into econ.) and the fact that there's lots of diversity, but it's north and I think many econ classes are on south campus. Also I don't know how social it is..?
1835 Hinman: I really like it, but it's not a res college... :(

I'm also thinking about International studies res college, willard, or chapin. But I'm not sure because none of the other res. colleges relate to my major.
CONFUSED.

Question: does anyone know if for the res colleges, you can get food without stepping OUTSIDE? i mean, really, who wants to step outside to get food when its like 0 degrees outside.

magnetique, you'll be close to a dining hall regardless, so don't worry too much about that. plus, as i said on another thread, a lot of evanston restaurants offer free delivery to northwestern students, so you'll hardly have to open the door to get hot philly cheese steaks delivered, etc.

cci's pretty social usually.
chapin's got big rooms, but i don't know a single person there.

Thanks for all the useful information, Purposeful1 :) It's really helped me make my decision about dorms, and I've decided that CCI will be my first choice, and after that probably Allison and 1835 Hinman and perhaps some other residential college. Is it hard to get into the res. colleges - is it selective?
