Ignore the crappy title. I'm in a dark place right now because I really feel like I should have done better on the reading portion of the September ACT.

Anyway, I was wondering if you guys could tell me which of my two ACT scores is better. I got a 31 composite both times and was gunning for at least a 32. It sucks.

April ACT- Comp. 31
English: 33
Math: 29
Reading: 34
Science: 27
Writing: 9 (comb. E and W: 31)

September ACT- Comp. 31
English: 34
Math: 33
Reading: 30
Science: 27
Writing: 11 (comb. E and W: 34)

Which of these two scores should I send to colleges? Some schools already have my first score, is it worth sending in my second as well (even if they don't superscore)?

These are pretty close and it shouldn’t matter. But, it’s a good question so my decision would be based on;

Where you want to go and for what major.

What your school grades are in those subjects.

ex/ If you’re gunning for a top liberal arts school, go with April.
ex/ If your math grades are worse than your english grades, and especially if you’re going for science/engineering, go with September.

^I wouldn’t advise sending both b/c it shows desperation and that you’re only as good as a 31 no matter what. (You send only one and maybe they think you could’ve gotten a 33? - ok probably not, but at least it doesn’t give them a chance to see 2 of the same scores.)

^I agree with the above post. Really, sending in both scores to the same school won’t change anything, it is still a 31. If there are any schools you haven’t applied to yet, send the second one simply because of the 11 in writing.

Totally disagree with above posters: the answer depends 100% on where you are applying; more and more schools are superscoring the ACT…do a search to find the most updated list…

If the college does not superscore the ACT, I would recommend the Sept test because many schools count the math and english to match up to the M/V on the SAT (that discussion is for another thread; I don’t necessarily agree with the logic, but it remains true)

It’s basically a question of whether the Math or Reading is regarded as more important, correct? Does the essay really make a difference?

For reference, UW-Madison is the only school I’ve applied to so far that has seen my April score. They didn’t get the September one. Genetics (pre med) is my prospective major. Given my GPA, I’m hoping I will get in. However, there are scholarships given through the school that might have a prereq math score so I’m not sure if it would be to my advantage to send in September or not.

Does the college require you to send all test scores? If so, then send them all in. Colleges hate dishonesty more than sub-par ACT scores (of course some say that it’s impossible for the adcoms to find out, but theres always a slight chance that they do)

Plus I think your sept scores look much better than your april ones since Math is pretty high and writing score is solid.

I’ve heard that the best predictor of college success is English, Writing, and Math, and that Reading and Science are based more on what you have learned. If colleges are cognizient of that, then you should send the second one, especially since an 11 on Writing is stellar! If it’s a reach and someplace you really really want to go, I would send both. Both your scores are great and good luck! Don’t beat yourself up.
