A to Z: What To Bring To College

How many towels is a good amount?

“Make-up (a lot of more low-maintenance girls I know often just go with the basics-- foundation or tinted moisturizer for covering up flaws, mascara and lip gloss or a lipstick)”

I found this comment really offensive because you’re implying that all girls-even “low maintenance” ones-wear some amount of make-up. No one here needs tips on how much make up you think they should be wearing.
People going to college are often at an age where society forces them to be insecure about their looks and we shouldn’t have to be assaulted with demands towards our appearances when we’re just looking for a list of things to pack for college.

Thanks for considering changing that line to:
Make-up (if you wear it)

^Wow, I find that comment offensive. Could you be any more rude? The OP typed this up pretty quickly, it’s not like he/she spent hours making sure no one could nitpick at anything. Besides, the OP was speaking from experience, and all girls she knows wear make up.

Goodness, don’t be so quick to take offense. I hope you’re going to a reaaaally PC college…

Settle down. Sure, my comment is a little heated, but it’s truly just anger at the sexist way our world is built. I’m not angry at the OP, I’m just upset that people are so unaware that saying something like that is completely sexist.
If you don’t understand, the statement communicates that in order to be presentable, girls must at least cover up their flaws and recolor their eyelashes and lips.

I believe strongly that this is a serious issue, and while the phrase is not intended to hurt anyone, it reflects a worldview that doesn’t even consider a statement like this to be harmful.

I’m sorry that you’re offended, although you were very rude too. It’s not about being PC, it’s about fixing the problems our generation has, starting with careless comments that carry more weight than they are meant to.

Well your second comment clarifies it a lot. The first one was anger at the OP. The second one was being mad at the turn our culture has taken recently. Much better.

I’m not sure a college advice forum is the best place for large-scale social commentary… If you’re going to hijack the thread from packing items to the world’s moral injustice, at least make it about the original subject instead of something broad (like the convoluted notion that someone is spreading sexism because she mentioned that some girls are more low-maintenance for wearing less makeup than others).

Tampons with paper applicators - Now THAT’s an injustice.

Wow, seriously?

First of all, the wording couldn’t be changed unless a moderator did it.

Second, that’s just ridiculous. No one is forcing anyone to be “insecure about their looks”…most girls do bring at least some make-up to college. And for most I know, it’s not about drastically changing our looks so much as highlighting our natural beauty. “Hey, I have really pretty eyes…I’ll put some eyeliner on them to make them pop.” “I love my lips, let me put some gloss on so they stand out.”

Calm down. Seriously. No one is being sexist.

27dreams-yes.

I love this thread! I just added a bunch of stuff to my list!

People always forget duct tape! For fixing stuff or just tapping up your buddy for a little Edward 40 Hands, it is the #1 most important college need.

OH MY GOSH THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS! i’ve been freaking out about what i was going to bring so bad. this beats my big list i’ve had open in text edit for about a month, lol

This list is very helpful. Extremely, everybody should be thankful for it. Obviously it is long. Obviously she is not saying everyone needs everything on the list, and she’s not saying you HAVE to buy it before you get to college. It’s just an extensive list of what you will likely need in college. It’s helpful if you’ve started your own list and are trying to figure out what you’ve forgotten. Nothing needs to be removed from the masterlist, just from your own personal list.

I love lists myself. I’m lame  I find it fun.

Bump for the people headed to summer sessions.

Great list.

Great stuff in this thread.

I found this site helpful as well - http://www.whattobringtocollege.org

this is so awesome

This is a great list. But I have to ask, is there a list, “What NOT to bring to college”? I have a 13.5 hour car ride to my college, so packing must be very condensed to say the least. I have to pick and choose carefully what makes the cut.

Yes: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-life/1174994-what-not-bring-college.html#post12904746

I posted here last year when I was getting ready to go to a summer program; now, I am packing for college! Thank you again for this list. It has made my life so much easier.

Storage bins/boxes. Toolkit (hammer, nails, duck tape, screws)

that’s great. but how can I bring mop from my home. should I bring it by the plane? lol

hmmm I would bring some web apps that are essential in college:

Evernote, for notes
RentChimp, for easy housing solutions
Pandora, for music
Nike Training, to stay fit
Wordpress, to blog back to your fam!
