thankyou! ^
someone has their wits with them

I’m sorry but with all due respect the original poster needs to determine for himself what the answer is and should not be seeking “cribbed” info from others for a freakin’ admission essay. The barest modicum of expression of interest is to articulate why you think you should go there ;)

Just write authentically about what you want and the fit of what Michigan offers.

PS They don’t formally calculate expression of interest via visit tracking from what I know, but they certainly do consider expression of interest in terms of how well-versed an applicant is in UMich and why one wants to attend.

^visit doesn’t matter to the school; it might to the visitor.

UM wants to know whether you think enough about their university & program to have looked into it beyond, maybe, a web page or USN&WR. This question is also asked of job interviewees… “Why do you want to work here?” (It needs to be something more than “I want a job and you are hiring.”) Spend some time really looking at U-Mich and see what makes it DIFFERENT from other places that are available to you. This can be done via web site but also personal visit, talking to alumni, looking at research that professors are doing/publishing, getting info on campus clubs or dorm life or… the list goes on and on. I don’t think it’s bad to mention “quality of the program” but you have to also go beyond that. I would suggest going beyond mere web browsing, which anyone can do. I disagree that a personal visit is unnecessary… I think a (quality) visit can really solidify some things you like/dislike about U-M. If that’s not feasible, at least try to talk to some U-M alumni and look beyond the basic web pages. The more you know, the more interest you have shown and the more thought you’ve actually put into it. I believe that’s what the university wants to see. So make sure your essay shows the thought & work you’ve put into it.

is the question geared to the individual school, such as Ross, or the university as a whole?

The individual school you are interested in. So if you want to apply to ross then talk about ross

but you only write one essay right? you dont write one about the college and then one about ross, correct?

You should address what attracts you to the specific program but often there are qualities of the university as a whole that are also attractive that you can mention. The program/school is part of the university. You will be attending /living at the university. It would be natural to have thought about why this big U with all of this incredible stuff going on is a good fit for you.

In case no one noticed, this thread started last year. My guess is that the OP has either long since been admitted to Michigan or gone elsewhere.

thank you. For having created this thread.
