A very simple question regarding the GRE

Hey everyone,

I had a very simple question regarding the GRE:

If I take it, and it's not required for admission to a graduate program at some university, will that university still see my score? I'm sorry if this seems like a really stupid question. I do have to give permission for a university to see my test scores, right? Can a university find out whether I have taken the test without my knowledge? Do I have to disclose whether I have taken it if it's not required in the application process?

The reason I'm asking is I want to take it, and if I happen to get a great score, I would apply to programs requiring the GRE. But if I fail horribly, I don't want a horrid GRE to ruin my application to a program where the GRE is optional.

Thanks for your help ;)

Cheers!

No, you have to give your permission. You will be given the chance to submit scores to the universities of your choice immediately following the test.
