A "w" on my hs transcript?

This is not exactly a "what are my chances" post, but it is relevant. I am a junior in high school, and just recently I have been have some family issues, with ill relatives and my parents in and out all of the time. I am over-scheduled this year, so I am debating dropping one of my classes that has a large workload. The problem is that I will have a "w" on my transcript, for withdrawal. How much will this impact how colleges look at me? I am an A student, looking at colleges like Cornell, maybe Brandeis (I know, a range). Any advice? Thanks!

Will you take the class next year? It might be helpful to know what the class is. If it messes up a sequence, then it may be more of an issue.

The class I am dropping is mentorship, where I go on site with a mentor. In involves a lot of writing and weekly assignments. It is not a part of a sequence.

I do not think that is a big deal at all. If you are ever questioned about it, which you probably will not be, you can easily answer that it was not what you expected and you wanted to concentrate on academics.

I agree that is not a problem. Although mentorship sounds like a great class, colleges would be more concerned if you dropped a core subject (i.e. math, english, science, social studies). My s withdrew from an elective class first semester senior year after he had already submitted his college apps and simply sent his admission counselor an email explaining why he dropped the class given although it was fun, it was very time consuming and he wanted more time to focus on academic classes.
No big deal, no effect on admissions or merit money.

My son dropped calculus yesterday and we are hoping that it will not impact his chances.
