A Whites only scholarship?

I was browsing through scholarship options at my school today and noticed that their were several scholarship foundations that were for Italians, Irish, ect. And that made me think, don't people complain that they aren't allowed to have "whites only" scholarships?

I guess the reason is that "white" isn't really a culture as much as italian ect. But those scholarships do only include whites for the most part. I'm not saying its unfair or anything, i was just wondering if anybody else knew they existed?

there are also a lot of scholarships set exclusively for African-Americans, Latin-Americans, Asian-Americans, etc. as well. It's just a way of giving money, I guess.

CNN.com - New scholarship created for whites only - Feb. 16, 2004

Scholarships for Whites Only - Nov. 27, 2006

Well, you hear more about scholarships for minorities because they're sponsored through organizations like LULAC or the NAACP.

This is a great idea, affirmative action in college admissions is an absolute joke.

I can't say I'm for it, but it also makes me a hypocrite because I'm a minority. Sure, I don't like my advantage being my race, but if it helps me, I can't say I'll deny the opportunity if it gets me into my dream school.

They'd have to dress it up better than just "whites only." They'd probably call it people of European descent or something. That at least gives a geographical designation beyond skin color.

Wow that's so ridiculously ignorant (Roger Williams Uni posting)

Pshhh. There are scholarships for EVERYONE. There's probably a very selective financial award given to those of Chinese and German descent with an amputee for a relative.

I don't see a problem with scholarships for just one particular Anglo-ish nationality, especially since there are so many for other specific ethnic groups, especially "minorities." Whites-only is pretty broad, though, so that seems kinda weird.

edit: Oh, they were protests! Haha... ehh... no comment.

Well, to put my two cents in:

as many of you probably know, i support affirmative action. And i also support scholarships given to people of such ethnicities such as Italian or Irish, just like i support Christian or Jewish scholarships. But i DO NOT support "Whites only" scholarship, because in saying white you are virtually saying "anybody who isn't 'colored'" which is a scholarship with the sole purpose of excluding people. I think that special scholarships should be designated to a minority group of people, whether its African Americans, devout catholics, Italians, athletes, people aspiring to be cooks, ect.

It's not the first brush with controversy for the group. The school temporarily froze the Republicans' money in the fall during a fight over a series of articles published in its monthly newsletter. One article alleged that a gay-rights group indoctrinates students into homosexual sex.

Yeah, now that I look at the group more closely, I don't like this group at all. I don't mind the scholarship because really, I don't care. There are already so many race based scholarships out there, so what if white is one of them? However, this group irks me.

Some scholarships actually say "White Students Only." They tend to be agricultural scholarships.

I've never really seen them, but I'm not surprised. However, I do think there is a much different message behind a "Whites Only" scholarships and scholarships offered to other minorities such as Black and Hispanic. A Whites only scholarship seems to be all about supporting the majority and keeping out the minority. Minority scholarships seem to be more about trying to get the minority on par in life, education, and opportunity with the majority.

Is it really necessary since Whites get most of the scholarships and total financial aid money anyway?

Similarly, I have seen questions like why do Blacks need a Black Miss America or a magazine's The 50 most beautiful Blacks? My thinking is that with the Miss America which is organized by whites, there is token representation by black women and with People magazine (white run and owned) again, you will find 49 most beautiful whites and one black.

So certain things have to be done for adequate representation.

"My thinking is that with the Miss America which is organized by whites, there is token representation by black women and with People magazine (white run and owned) again, you will find 49 most beautiful whites and one black."

This didn't match my recollection of the national pageants I'd seen, which included many beautiful black women. I just checked, and 3 of the last 8 Miss USA winners (including the current Miss USA) were black-- somewhat overrepresented since black are about 12% of the US population. I couldn't find similar figures for Miss America.

I think he means represented in the overall pool, not just the winners.

and i think the miss black america is because the two cultures often have different perceptions of what is beautiful.

Correct !!!!!!

Can't say I much care for the group itself, but the idea? I'm white. I'm not from a rich family, nor from a poor one. Any advantage to bring yourself to a higher education is fine in my book. Book? No book. Napkin-cloth maybe...

But anyways, if it's such a problem, maybe I'll open up the odd scolarship fund. One-eyed white children scholarship, parapalegic salvadorian scholarship, or even the norweigan prospective engineers scholarship!

Honestly now, if you're going to allow race based scholarships, let everyone do what they want. That, and it is their money. Let them send whoever they want some college funding.

I'll sum my rambling up like this: I don't care who or how you give money for college.
