White male only scholarship

Texas Organization Opens Exclusive White Male Scholarship - Fastweb

Discuss. . .

Silly to argue about this. Of course they are allowed to make it a white male only scholarship.

Nobody thinks it’s insane to have a hispanic-only scholarship, or a females-only scholarship.

Affirmative action isn’t equality. Race should be irrelevant nowadays, but too many of us can’t seem to let go of the world’s troubled past.

There were other threads about this elsewhere. My take:

Male only scholarship is fine; God knows there are so many more female only scholarship, and males actually attend college less now, so more motivation and resources for boys to go to college is fine. There are like three all-male colleges left, and they’re always under fire, as opposed to the many accepted all-female colleges.

White only, while legally fine, seems excessive in making its point. Ethnic white-only scholarships are better, in my view, as those groups (Italian, Irish, Polish, German, Jewish) did face discrimination, while “Whites” in general did not (those other groups, aside from the Germans, were often seen by English descendants as not white enough or not of pure blood; not the Germans because the English are ancestrally German). But whatever, they can do what they want.

Cough cough cough WHITE SUPREMACIST! cough cough cough lol :P

All I have to say about it is that I totally not surprise it is a Texas scholarship

I think it’s stupid, but then I think that most scholarships based on race, sex etc. are stupid.

White supremacy! KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

Wow, that’s 11 2/3 racist terrorist organizations.

Well. The fact is. If you’re a white male, getting scholarships kind of sucks.

They may not have faced challenges in the past (actually… Who in today’s world really has that many challenges compared to fifty years ago? It’s a completely different animal at all if you want to talk about facing challenges based on race), but they do face challenges today when it comes to the competitiveness for scholarships. Everyone knows that a ‘hook’ for college admissions and/or scholarships is being an URM. A white guy does NOT fit that profile at all… in fact, that just makes it harder for him to get it.

Think of it this way:
You have two completely identical applicants… one’s white and one’s black and you’re at a 90% white school… who are they going to choose? The black one so they can have ‘diversity’.

Anyways. This is always a touchy topic, because it brings up a lot of bad subjects in American history. But eh. I could care less. I mean there are scholarships for tall people and short people… why not white males?

And Catholic people named Zolp.

Yeah–it’s pretty frustrating to be looking through scholarships and see all this stuff about having to have suffered extraordinary hardship, or being black or hispanic, wanting to study civil engineering and go into the oil business, whatever. There are just some pretty ridiculous criteria, and a lot of scholarships that exclude white males. So why not have one just for white males? The money belongs to whoever is sponsoring this; s/he can do what s/he wants. It’s about as racist as all those scholarships just for URMs–that is, racist. But measured against all those other scholarships, this one is perfectly legitimate.

I think it is fine, after there are scholarships for every other race and females. Whats the issue? This is equality, giving white males the same opportunities.

Please tell me how many of you got infractions for your comments…

What I think is strange is that one is only required to be 25% Caucasian to apply. Thus, I am able to apply even though I’m half black and do not have the appearance of a white male at all, haha.

or people could be “passing.” but that is really strange… just like i’ve heard of white south africans putting african american on their applications… the app says RACE/ETHNICITY not nationality.

white males are a minority in texas. scholarships are more often than not given to minorities. that’s why there are women/ethinic minority scholarships in certain fields. i’m sure there’s a male nurse scholarship too.

when people hear minority they think black/hispanic/female. not true. depends on the context of the situation. my school is 54% blakc/hispanic. we are in fact the majority vs the 44% white and 2% asian/other.

Who cares? it’s their money.

just because people have something, doesn’t mean they are adept at using it, and wouldn’t benefit from influences. Yes, it is there money, but it turns out people care about how others spend their money (and for good reason).

Yeah but as the person above me said Texas is a minority - majority state and if you are a white male it is ridiculously hard to find scholarships whereas if you are black or hispanic there are hundreds of scholarships available to you.

hm I wonder if there is a disparity in income though (like which group has a greater average income - it could be the minority group in this case).

“…if you are black or hispanic there are hundreds of scholarships available to you.”

Can you post some links please? I can’t use them, but maybe others can. We are not in Texas, but not too different here in California, and the ones I find seem to depend on need.

Not too much work I hope, since there are hundreds.

It’s a private organization, so they can do whatever they want.

Not like there aren’t scholarships exclusive to minorities.
