ok I am not a direct Kelley. Everyone tells me A101 is a weed out class. I was going to take it right away in the Fall.
Now I am not so sure. From what I hear it is very hard. Please help take it or not?
sorry I mean A 100
It is basic accounting. If you go to class and do the assignments you will be fine. It is the type of course that you cannot blow off until the night before the midterm and expect to pass.
It is a weed out course in that it weeds out students who probably should not have been admitted to IU in the first place.
thanks for the reply. So much stress and I haven’t even started yet
It’s not like you are going to get better at accounting after one semester of not taking it. Just relax, lots of people probably do not do well because they don’t try very hard. Personally, I am going to be a freshman in the fall and I plan on taking it the first 8 weeks of first semester. I had accounting in high school though
A100 is a nightmare if you are new to accounting. Don’t underestimate the work involved. It’s hard because it’s condensed to 8 weeks and there are only 2 tests which contain tricky bs accounting questions.
There is plenty of help available though so don’t struggle alone.
Everyone in Kelley takes it, so just be prepared.
My daughter had no accounting background and got an A+ in A100. She did so well because she went to every class and did every practice test. No need to stress, if you’re willing to put in the work/time/effort you will do well. Enjoy your summer!
YMMV
One look at the grades in A100 over the years or a conversation with people at Kelley will tell you hard work alone will not get you an A in A100. Some people just get it.
Accounting is like law… it is a different language and way of thinking. I took no accounting in high school, took all the practice tests and attended all lectures and review sessions and still missed an A by 1%… I had a family friend who is an accountant look at a past test and they were stunned that IUB would throw this amount of material at noobs in 8 weeks.
My cum gpa after freshman year as a direct admit and Hutton Honors is 3.9. No, I am not majoring in Accounting. Lol
A lot of IU students go off the deep end partying first semester and blow off class work, hence the low freshman retention rate in all majors. If you are not one of these slackers you will do fine in A100, maybe not an A+ but you will be OK.
Thanks for the great info. Does anyone have any info on what book is used or maybe were I can find practice tests that The ones used to study for the midterm and finals. I would like to start over the summer
My daughter just finished this class as a freshman (A-). Go to every class, do all of the homework. The practice tests weren’t available right away, but when they are do as many as you can. My daughter said that she kind of burned out doing them at the end, but felt that the more you can do the better you will do on the test.
A100 is overrated. Just do the work and you’ll be fine. People do bad in this course because they think they can start studying the day before exams.
i agree with nico52. the professor for A100 is also great and there are tons of free resources for additional help
thanks everyone.
