I was reading about the Angier B Duke scholarship about last week, and I remember finding somewhere where it says the scholarship is never given to those who choose not to interview with their initial application. However, now I can't find anywhere that says that an interview is required, except for the invitational one in April. Can anyone comment on the interview requirement?

I really don't think the initial interview is required - for example, some of the folks we invite are international students from areas where there'd be no one to interview them! Now, turning down the invited interview for scholars weekend is a guarantor of non-selectedness...

I don't think it's required, but I think if an alum calls you to interview you with your initial application and you decide to not meet with him/her, then it won't look too great.

Maybe you misread it and it said that you had to do the AB interview, not the normal one, to get the scholarship?

I'm an AB Duke, and I haven't heard of any rule like this. I didn't choose not to interview -- I submitted the pre-app by the appropriate deadline and requested an interview -- but my local alumni organization didn't reach everyone in time, and my only Duke interview was the one at AB weekend.

But in general, if you can have an interview, I'd strongly advise it. Not requesting an interview can only hurt you: it raises questions about your interest in the school and robs you of a great chance to impress.
