interview inquiry

does everyone get one or does getting one mean some applicants have been 'filtered out' so to speak?

i'm asking cuz i got a call about it and havn't responded thinking everyone gets one..... plz correct me if i'm wrong. thanks!

Everyone does NOT get one. Having an interview will not boost your chances, but I can assure you that being offered an interview and turning it down for no good reason will not look good on your application.

i have mine tomorrow :-)!

Good luck...

In my school, 3 people applied early, only one of us got an interview and all three of us got in. I don't think interviews are that important, they get to whoever they can get to. They're for you to get information, not as an evaluation. I don't know how they'll look at you turning down an interview though.

yeah, and a lot of times, it's first come first serve. I'd love an interview. if you don't want it, i'll take it ;)

BlueDevilBBall -- whether or not you plan to decline the interview, you should respond to the call asap. The person who called you is probably a volunteer alum who is donating his/her time to help Duke. If nothing else, it's a matter of courtesy to return the call.

Unless I'm misreading your question, it seems you are considering skipping the interview, if it is offered to everyone. This is not a good reason for passing on the opportunity. An interview is more likely to help you than hurt you (even if it's just a matter of nudging you over the line). I suggest everyone interview with Duke, if possible.

Almost everyone is offered an interview (those who aren't either missed the Dec 1 deadline or live too far from available local alums) and few turn down the offer. Just keep that in mind.

"those who aren't either missed the Dec 1 deadline"

Not accurate--Duke extends interview opportunities to those who missed the December 1 deadline. I'm not sure why the school perpetuates this myth, but take it from someone who has personal experience!

I applied in January, and I got offered an interview

austinj -- Sorry, maybe I should have been clearer. I wasn't saying that you won't get an interview if you apply after Dec 1. Rather, I was implying that those who aren't offered interviews are more likely to have applied after Dec 1 since the people who make the deadline are given priority.

The Dec 1 deadline is not a "myth." If you are offered an interview after missing the deadline, it is because your local alumni committee had the availability to interview you. For these "late" requests, it is left up to the local committee to determine whether to offer an interview or not. Still, most committees are going to try as hard as they can to interview everyone. It still doesn't happen, though. My understanding is that here in Atlanta, we still have about 60 late applicants who might not get interviewed because of availability.

Hope this clears things up.

That makes sense. :) Thanks, gadgets!

Just to set the record straight, interviews are not required but are recommended when possible. Yes, the committee understands if distance or other factors prohibit an interview. However, if one is offered to you, I would try to arrange for one. Contrary to what Fizz says, although the interview offers a good opportunity to ask questions about Duke if you have any, it is not really just to give the applicant information. On the contrary, they are for the interviewer to get to know the applicant better, and perhaps offer a dimension that cannot be presented on the application. And yes, they are considered as part of the evaluation process.

Sometimes, the information does not get to the alumni doing the interview, or perhaps the alumni has had problems contacting the applicant. If you have not heard from anyone regarding an interview by mid to late January, I would contact Duke to follow up and let them know that you would like one.

I tried contacting duke, but they sent me to a useless voice recording.

i got an interview offer, but it was in a city about an hour away, so i declined

you declined because it was an hour away ? dude, i would drive 24 hours for a duke interview

Yeah man, are you crazy?

maguo1, i love duke. you know, there are colleges one applies to, well just to apply, and there are colleges or a college for which one has a great passion and love. duke is my college. i mean trinity. anyway, unfortunately i am not able to have an interview because i am an international student from romania (looong distance between romania and north carolina) but believe me, if duke asked me to come to north carolina for an interview i would take the first plane to america. (and of course if money wasn't a problem-it is :( ) .

maguo, i believe, as bandmom says, that "the committee understands if distance or other factors prohibit an interview." This is the case with me. There is no call for rudeness.
