Abbreviating college names in essays

I am back with another question about essays: should I abbreviate college names in essays, especially if the college in question is well-known? For an essay I'm writing, I've abbreviated the college name after its first mention, and while it's a bit weird to me, I feel that colleges know what school you're referring to and it helps me save space on an essay that is only supposed to be one-page long. However, does anyone know the protocol about this?

It’s like you read my mind. I’d like to know the same thing, except the abbreviation stands for the school I’m actually applying to. I used the full name first.

It may depend on the school. For example, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is commonly referred to as Carolina. I think in that instance it would be fine.

Which school(s) are you referring to?

I’m talking about Carnegie Mellon. It has an especially long name so I wondered if using CMU would be ok. I guess the same would go for NYU and the like, although I’m sure they don’t have specific page requirements.

Just like JEquestrian did, the first time you mention the school in your essay, use the full name. Subsequently, use the shortened version. The schools are aware that their essay word limitation requires the students to be very economical in their character count.
