Abet

I have a question regarding Bioengineering at Columbia. It is not accredited, but most of the other engineering majors are. Is it wise, then, to select this as a major, or would it be better to chose a major in which you are interested (perhaps less) which is accredited?

Have you done a search on this board yet? Several people had similar questions in the past.

With BioE, it's hard to say. I read somewhere that most BioE are young programs so maybe they haven't developed enough to meet ABET's prerequisites for accreditation. My 2 cents would be to do what you are most interested in (as long as you have the aptitude for it). Columbia is a well known university and as long their BioE curriculum isn't just integrated bio, then go for it.

But ultimately, you have to make the decision yourself (I know, how many times has this been said on this board). Just research into it, ask your current engineering professors for their thoughts and even email Columbia's BioE department/division with your concerns. Hopefully Columbia doesn't give you a biased reply though, lol. Good luck man.

regarding BioE and Columbia Im sure that employers are aware of the young age of the field and thus the lack of ABET

only UCSD in the UC system has BioEngineering accredited

Thank you for the information. I recently transferred to SEAS from a mostly humanities curriculum (though I took sciences too) and I was wondering whether it was best to accept their offer (since it was not accredited).

Soho2, I am going to be doing Bioengineering at Columbia. One of my current Biomedical Eng. professors at Drexel (which is ABET Accredited for our major) has several friends who are Bioengineering Profs at Columbia, she says I am in very good hands :) . Based on the work I did there last summer, I believe her.

Citan, actually if you do a search on Bioengineering in NY and PA, You find that several schools are actually ABET accredited for the major. For PA, Drexel, UPenn, and Pittsburgh. For NY, RPI, Rochester, and Syracuse. I have no doubt Columbia will soon make that list. They are working towards it.

layla: Yea I know but the list for this major is very short....I was only talking about the UC system in particular. I am sure by the time he graduates Columbia should be in the list. Bioengineering is a rapidly growing field.

oops! sorry for the misunderstanding.
