Abnormal Application - Effect on Chances?

This is a abnormal "what are my chances" thread. More like a "what would benefit me more" topic. Take a look: i doubt you see applications like mine very often.

Tufts University is my ideal college choice. I love it for many reasons, but i am at a dilemma.

I did not take enough honors classes in 9th and 10th grade, the result was a low GPA. In 11th I shaped up. At the end of 11th grade my wGPA is 5.193. My predicted wGPA after semester 1 of senior year is 5.324. My question is should I apply early decision, with my wGPA of 5.193, to show Tufts how much I want in OR apply normal decision but with a wGPA of 5.324?

If i applied normal I'd have more chances to take the SATs and raise that score but I'd miss out on a chance to show that school how much i desperately want in.

Oh and my SATs are 1300 out of 1600. Do you think I do not have a chance no matter what method of application i choose?

What is that GPA out of, 5.0? 6.0?

Also, you might want to move this thread to http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/tufts-university/;</a> this forum is for the Tufts Class of 2012.

After discussing this with a Tufts admission officer, I am going to apply ED 2, which gives me time to raise my SATs and my GPAs. At the time of admission my statistics will be as follows:

Weighted GPA: 5.2 out of 6
UNweighted GPA: 3.6 out of 4
Totals Honors (not counting APs): 5
1 honors in grade 9, 2 honors in grade 10, 2 honors in grade 11 (+3 APs this year), 0 honors in grade 12 (+5 APs in 12th)
Total APs: 8
Classes: Chemistry, Statistics, English101, English102, Physics, Economics, Calculus AB, Spanish (year 5)
Total Level 1 courses (APs + Honors): 13
SATs: Current SATs are math: 640, CR: 570, writing:500. 1710/2400. 1210/1600
I’ve only taken once, i intend to raise to math:750, CR:650, writing:600. Please give me an estimate on chances of admission with my current AND with my intended scores
SAT IIs: I intend to take chemistry and math (1 or 2, haven’t decided yet)
ACT: I took them once, with writting, and got a 27.

Extracurricular Activities: National Honor Society, DECA (a business club), treasurer of Spanish Club, Played soccer for 3 years and ran winter track for 3 years
Community Service: 100+ hours by the time of admission, I could raise this easily if you think it would help.
Work: LEADERSHIP as a soccer referee, intense position where leadership is vital, doing it for 6 years, certified by the united states soccer federation (this is a big hook of mine) AND 2 summer jobs at local restruaunts, all i can emphasize here is responsibility

Like i said before, my 9th and 10th grade years I took easy classes. I did not take enough honors classes those years. HOWEVER, i tried to make up for it by taking so many in grades 11 and 12. This is why my application is unique, I jumped up from 1 to 2 to 5 to 5 level 1 courses throughout my high school time. Again, in grades 9 and 10 I did not take the most challenging courses my school offer but in grades 11 and 12 i certainly did.

Also, i have a cousin who is an alumni and will write me a letter of recontamination and I feel i would do very good with an interview with an alumni. What do you think are my odds of acceptance?

Your GPA is on the lower end and your test scores are on the low end too. You can get in only if you really continue to do well in school and you raise your test scores. I suggest you really spend this summer purely just studying for the SAT. If you have to work or whatever, then study whenever you can. This can really make a difference. I wouldn’t worry so much about SAT II’s. Just focus on the main SAT.

After that, really nail the essays. That’s the big part about Tufts. While grades and test scores are important, it’s also necessary to stand out via the essays. Thus, really be genuine about them. I suggest having your english teacher look over it. But also take suggestions from family and friends to see if it sounds real.

Best of luck!
