I'm considering applying to Central Washington University (later - I'm a high school junior now), where, hopefully, I might be able to pursue an English major and/or a Japanese Language major. I browsed on their websight, so, I do know what the school themselves had to say - but, does anyone know anything personally about this school? Positives? Negatives? Things you think I should know before applying?
Please let me know...

I know a few people who have had kids go to Central over the past few years. Feedback has been neutral to negative about it. From what I’ve been told, students have a hard time getting classes and taking a full load of courses consistently. A large part of the student body is not exactly highly motivated and, since there is nothing to do outside of school, there is a lot of hard-core partying. One of my friend’s kids has had some scary experiences with roommates, living off-campus btw, and left the school. Again, I have no personal experience, this is just what I’ve heard.

I also know several people who have attended Central. I can affirm the concerns about partying and course loads. Also, Ellensburg is in the middle of NOWHERE, so you should consider that. Also, because Central is fairly easy to get in to (880/1600 for 25th percentile SAT, no essay required) many of the students simply do not care about academics.

look at UW and western instead :p

Ellensburg is seriously in the middle of nowhere, not in the quaint college town way, but in the I-didn’t-know-they-had-wastelands-in-the-Pacific-Northwest way. I don’t have firsthand experience with Central’s quality, but its reputation is not comparable to other state schools except maybe Eastern. Are you in-state?

Thanks, everyone - I’m glad I got your input. I don’t think I’ll be going. I looked the other night and couldn’t find very many notable alumni aside from a few NFL stars, so I’ll probably start looking elsewhere.
I’m very studious and quiet, so, I am trying to avoid “party schools” by any means possible… but, I’m also trying to find a place that’s in the western U.S., is relatively affordable (I don’t think I’m doing Ivy-league)doesn’t have too much rain, and has strengths in both Japanese language and English (Central’s site mentioned they had the programs in question).

(By the way, seattle_mom… to answer your question, I’m actually in Nevada, but, I do have a father that lives in Washington. He says that I can get in-state tuition because he’s a Washington resident, but since I myself don’t live there, I’m not entirely sure if that’s true or not…)

Um, there are festivals and the like in Ellensburg, so there are activities for persons who look for them. That being said, I gather that CWU [and EWU, for that matter] advise students in their Catalogs that because of infrequency of some classes, including major requirements, there’s no guarantee that you can satisfy your major’s degree requirements in four years time.

But I would nevertheless encourage you to consider EWU over Central, or even Washington State University in Pullman.
