About courses in college?

I'm only a high school junior right now and I take about 8-10 courses every year. What about college though? How many courses in college do people usually take?

I hear people talk about credit hours. What are those and how do they work?

But most importantly how many classes do people take every year in college? How long do they last?

Credit hours approximately equal the number of hours you spend in class a week. 15 is generally normal.

I take 3-4 classes every quarter. You spend a lot less time in class in college. You will also take a lot fewer classes.

I usually take between 4-6 classes, and most people consider that an overload. You definitely won’t be in class as much as you are in high school, but you’ll probably spend an equivalent or MORE time working on class assignments and studying.

At least for my university and most of the ones I’ve seen, labs are 1 credit [yet they usually last 3-5 hours once a week], many English courses are 3 credits, science lectures tend to be 3, and math tends to be 3-5. This will most likely differ wherever you go, but that’s the trend I’ve noticed.

For example, I took 18 credits my first semester: 1 math class (3), 1 chemistry class (3), 1 chemistry lab (1), 2 gen eds (3+3), 1 English (3), 1 Honors class (1), 1 online English (1).
My second semester, I took 19 credits: 2 math classes (3+4), 1 chem + lab (3+1), 1 bio + lab (3+1), 1 gen ed (3), internship (1).

Generally, people take 15 credits, and you can kind of see how that would break down. Depending on your college, it’s a semester or quarter breakdown. I know nothing about quarters, but at my university, a semester runs from August 20ish to December 20ish with spring being January 20ish to May 20ish. [Those were close to the dates for this year.] You can also take courses during the summer and winter [most people take 4 tops, but I’ve seen more], which lasts a month and a half or so.

I take five classes a semester, which equates to roughly 15/16 credit hours a semester.

You spend far less time in class, but I spent a comparable amount of time studying as I did in high school. In high school, I took six courses, and of course, they met everyday. There is a lot less written work in college, though.
