about dual enrollment

does duke award credit for community college classes taken during high school?

Depends, this is done on a case by case basis. However, at the very least, you must have taken the courses on campus with other full time students and it must be during or after junior year (IIRC).

Additionally transfer credits must be approved before being granted, probably by the academic deans and the relevant department.

You should contact the department office first and ask their procedure for transfer credit.

Honestly though, IMHO, your chances of getting those credits are very slim.

Like SBR said it depends on the circumstances. Dual Enrollment however usually means that you are getting HS credit for the CC classes. Furthermore those CC classes are used as graduation requirements for HS. If that is the case then they will not be valid at Duke, because they were used for HS graduation.

However, if applying to medical school the AMCAS will accept it as college credit and if there is a grade it will factor into your college GPA as a college class taken during HS.

You also have to ask your self if you think those college courses taken at a community college will prepare you for higher level classes at Duke. Duke courses are many times harder than community college courses. Some community college courses (but not all) can be only as difficult as AP courses at other schools.

to vasudevank: i do plan to apply to med school after undergrad, so do i just wait till then to send my transcripts from CC?

to cdz512: im taking eng 1(composition/reading) right now, and i think it will prepare me for 4 year college english, do they c my summer class as just an AP or should i also take ap eng exam next year?
btw im applying as freshman this fall

You should take the AP test if you can as that credit is much more generally accepted than a CC credit.

Well I guess that takes care of that question…

Because Duke won’t accept the credit you can just sit tight and wait. When you apply for medical school, it asks for transcripts for all colleges (CC and 4-year). You send it along with Duke transcript and it will go into the AMCAS system.

AMCAS is a long ways off for you guys, I wouldn’t worry about that yet.

ok, thx for the info guys!
