About reading the SAT prep books cover-to-cover

Hi,

I am beginning my review of SAT I and I have about 6 weeks of time to study for the January test (I've finished school and I'm in my summer break, southern hemisphere :)) I was wondering if it is advisable to read all the review information in my prep books (looks tedious) or just focus my revision around TCB's official tests and use the prep books as a reference whenever I get stuck?

Thanks,

This may sound simple, but take a complete practice test from the CB book under real test conditions, time, no music, etc. Identify the areas where you have trouble and focus your study on those. Then test again and repeat. I like Rocket Review as a prep book, but they all (Princeton, Rocket, Kaplan) have the same basic test strategy advice, just different terminology. Don’t buy off-brand books; many are just flat bad. The CB book underplays the test strategy angles, and I think Barron’s isn’t very realistic for several reasons.

Oh, yeah. If you’re not already doing it, start reading the news weekly magazines cover to cover (Time, Newsweek, etc.) and read the editorial pages and book reviews in a quality paper. Avoid Rupert Murdock’s papers if possible. They will rot your brain. (Or read them if you want to see how people with rotted brains think.) Underline and learn any words you don’t know, and make sure you learn the second and third definitions.

Thanks, I’ve already started to read Time magazine which I’ve actually found interesting. I think focusing on questions and working on weak areas is the most important instead of wasting time to read the same strategies over and over again. Also with the questions, the more I do, the more I should begin to develop my own strategies.

Try reading different types of writings. I read from [The New York Times - Breaking News, World News & Multimedia](http://www.nytimes.com), [Granta Magazine](http://www.granta.com), [Salon.com - Salon.com](http://www.salon.com). I gave the practice tests from [SparkNotes: Today’s Most Popular Study Guides](http://www.sparknotes.com) as well
