Hi I’m new here. I just wanted to know a few things about getting scholarship/financial aid.
I’m a US citizen but I currently live abroad. I’m looking forward to getting a chance at Georgia tech. I’m not a resident of Georgia.
Given these, I obviously can’t afford the expenses so I wanted to know what type of scholarship/ grant I will get and how much will it cover? Does Georgia tech provide need based aid? If I choose to live in their dorms, will the aid cover that as well?
I’m currently an AS student so don’t ask me about SAT. Please answer these questions I am desperate! Thank you in advance
GT is a state university and as such the financial aid available OOS will be limited. It is also important to consider that very few students especially in Engineering finish in 4 years. So you need to budget for your cost for 5 years. According to Kiplingers newly released data, GT costs $45k OOS. After need awards OOS average cost is around $34k per year. Of course, that will go up every year.
On the plus side, if you come out of GT with an Engineering or CS degree, you will enjoy about the highest average starting salary of almost any institution in the country public or private. They do have above average student debt at graduation however. So some of that salary benefit may be used to pay that debt off.

@CluelessFreshman Georgia Tech does not give much financial aid to out of state or international students. If GT is like in the past, all you will get is loans as financial aid. There is some financial aid for out of state students, but it is very limited and usually for students from states nearby Georgia like Tennessee or Florida. See the GT financial aid website for more information about those scholarships. Have you run the net price calculator for GT for you? It will give you more specific info about your circumstances.
As far as merit scholarships, those are limited too and are primarily the Stamps Scholars or the Provost Scholarships. You need to apply EA for both scholarships. For Stamps Scholars, you will receive notice via email after acceptance if you are in the running for Stamps.
@CluelessFreshman Look over the FAFSA and CSS profile. There are websites for each. FAFSA is the free Federal financial aid form. CSS is a private service and you pay for them to transfer your parent’s tax data to US colleges. Those forms will ask about your parent’s salary, debt and savings. You may quality for subsidized federal government loans, but unlikely if your parents make say more than $100,000 combined income or if you don’t have brothers and sisters in college at the same time as you go. It may also not be a good idea to take a student loan but subsidized loans, the interest does not get charged to you while you are in college. If you have to get a regular bank loan, without the government subsidy, you are paying interest from the minute you take the loan.
There are Perkins Loans and Ford loans, from the federal government, but there are many other sources of loans.
Some universities actually give loans, but I do not like GaTech does that. Princeton does.
