? about the claremonts

I visited pomona and loved it but after more and more research and college thought i kind of think id like harvey mudd too but i wont be able to revisit. how similar are they? i mean they are in claremont consortium together but if i liked pomona a lot will i like hm too?

All I know bout the claremonts is that you can cross-register between all the colleges.

ex. you can attend pomona and take classes at Harvey Mudd as well

It’s all about the school name on that degree when you’re done…..

heh except no. id like to enjoy the people there too. i know that the claremonts allow you to take classes at each other but im sure that each school has a distinct body of students. so my main concer is whether the students will all be just as enjoyable as the pomona students were.

have you heard the scooby doo analogy?
Fred = CMC - (leadership)
Daphnie = Scirpps - (All female baby)
Velma = Harvey Mudd (science orentiented)
Shaggy = Pitzer - most free spirtied (easiest to get into)
Scooby = Pomona - (orginator of the group)

1) i dont like velma but i do like the math and sciences. 2) i like scooby and pomona. guess pomona gets the nod but still doesnt say if i need more info to apply. i dont want to apply to too many schools

ps i havent heard the analogy and like it. all its missing is a scrappy-doo

does anyone know if you can get two degrees from two seperate schools?

i think you get a degree at the school you are enrolled in even if a majority of your classes are at the other school

"does anyone know if you can get two degrees from two seperate schools?" you're lucky to get a single degree from hmc. one major is a full-time commitment.

there are few cases which warrant a degree from a school other than the one you are enrolled in.

i think pomona is the only school that offers a music major
scripps may or may not have some foreign languages that aren't campuswide

someone can elaborate for sure, but generally you get the diploma from your own school (in other words; no sneaking in through pitzer for the pomona diploma)

Well that's not exactly what I mean.

Let's say your at pomona and yoiu want to major in something there. Can you then get another major/or even minor at a different school (assuming it's not offered at Pomona)

If you want to apply to HMC, great...applying to more than one Claremont school is common. DO NOT GO without visiting. It has a VERY unique atmosphere and is not at all comparable to Pomona. If you're not positive that you want a tech major, then I wouldn't recommend HMC to you.

All of the schools allow cross-registration, but Pomona and HMC actually have a relatively small amount of "sharing" because they're the farthest away from one another (a whole 15 minute walk or so from the far end of one to the far end of the other). Also, CMC/Scripps/Pitzer share a science program whereas Pomona and Mudd each have their own. The schools aren't at all isolated from one another, but I would say they possibly share the least of any combination of Claremont schools.

Pomona is very much a LAC, whereas Mudd more closely resembles a tech school with a major humanities requirement. The major offerings, class offerings, student body makeup, campus atmosphere, architecture, landscaping, dining hall offerings, school mission, homework load, GE requirements...all totally different. I don't say this to discourage you at all...both are wonderful schools! But they are absolutely not-not-not the same (if they were, it would kind of defeat the great part of the consortium, which is that each school contributes something entirely unique).

You may major off-campus if Mudd doesn't offer the major (although as I said, if you're not pretty darn sure you want a tech major, I wouldn't recommend Mudd). No matter what school you major through, your degree will be from HMC. You can be a dual music and romance language major and your degree will still say HMC. You can also minor off-campus. Anything goes.

Claremont is fantastic...I absolutely love it. But I would definitely do more research into Mudd before assuming by association that you'll like it. Good luck!

(And PS...Scripps also offers a music major ;-))

Student615 hit the nail on the coffin...Pomona is as much like Harvey Mudd as Harvard is like MIT (if MIT had almost no humanities and social science departments of its own).

What about Scripps? Is the school have a similar atmosphere as the other Claremont colleges? What Claremont College has the best undergraduate program? I don't know what I'm interested to major in yet, so I want to keep my options in that school.

ForeverA, I'm not really sure what you're asking. All 5 of the Claremont schools are undergrad only and the consortium is known for excellence (4 of the 5 are in the top 50 undergrad programs in the country). You can learn more about the schools at www.claremont.edu.

Thank you very much student615. That is definitely helpful. I think what I will enjoy most is Pomona with some cross-registering of classes at hmc. If I get in...
