About this rolling admission

As of last night, OSU web site shows “completed” for DD’s application.

Now, when will us know if she get in? When will we know about scholarships? I know the big ones will be after the competition in March.

Seeing all these chances posts makes me a little bit uncomfortable. I regard OSU as a fairly competitive university.

For those who does not know me, here are the list of DD’s stat:

GPA 4.0 UW from a nationally ranked HS, school does not rank.
ACT 34 (12 essay) or better (expecting a 36 superscore)
SAT II phy 800, math II 800, Bio 750, USH 750
Will have 10 AP at graduation
Many awards from national to county level.

Hope to get into the honor program at OSU.

Your daughter will do fine with OSU admissions! She seems like she'd be a major contender for some of the biggie scholarships! Just stay on top of all the dates, she'll go down in March to compete for some of said scholarships. Even if the admision letter comes with an honor college invite and merit money offers, there are even more prestigious and high dollar scholarshps at OSU connected to those essay competitions they go down for in early spring.

She'll do fine and should definitely receive a pre-enrollment offer to Honors & Scholars.

I would expect her to receive an offer of admission and an invitation to the honors college by Thanksgiving. She sounds like the type of student that OSU is extremely interested in attracting. She will definitely have a chance to do well at the Maximus competition in the spring. The scholarships that she will be most interested in are decided based upon Maximus.

You didn't mention if she is a National Merit Semifinalist (it sounds like she probably is), but OSU has had a very attractive scholarship offer for Finalists. It has changed a bit this year, but it is still a nice offer and is not connected with Maximus.

My S was only interested in OSU and last year he had his acceptance in November. It sure reduced the stress level for the rest of his senior year.

Good luck.

yes, she is a NMSF and she could possibly get the Distinguished Scholarship for National Merit. We hope she could get more.

BTW, congratulations to your daughter on all of her achievements. As an Ohio State alumnus, I certainly hope Ohio State turns out to be a good fit for her, and she ends up attending. In any case, best of luck.

The Distinguished NMF scholarship used to be the best offering they had other than the Presidential - basically a 3/4 ride. They've lowered it to just full in-state tuition this year. Shame. Apparently NMFs are not as difficult to attract to OSU as they used to be.

I know OSU will have an essay competition in early next year for the top tier scholarships. Is that essay 100% of the weight or other factors considered?

DD has some new test scores and she has not sent to to OSU yet. She thinks whatever in there are good enough. Somehow I think the standard test scores are part of award consideration.

Should we spend additional $ to send in her SAT II scores etc?

We had parent/teacher conference at DD's HS today. One of her teachers, who has a D in OSU now, told us that OSU is very aggresive in terms of trying to keep top students in state. If that is the case, why do they scale back the "Distinguished NMF scholarship"?

We are actively looking for another saftey as right now because of that cut back. I don't know how many top in state student will pay $10,000 to go there instead of much better schools.

The Maximus kids all get a small amount ($2800?) and are invited to the weekend event. Last year, over 800 came. Personally I think that's sort of silly for 80 big prizes but part of the motivation is for the OSU staff to talk to great students and parents in person.

I think the Medalist awards (70 full instate tuition) are based only on those 2 essay questions. You could call the Honors program and ask.

The Presidential (10 full instate tuition plus room/board plus books) has a separate application to do ahead of the Maximus weekend. My D was burnt out on applications at that point and did not do a good job. One of her answers included something like, "I hope to develop a good work ethic in college!"

If you go back to February or March in this forum, you'll find our descriptions of the Maximus Day. I thought it was amazingly well run. Brutus and the small marching band was my favorite part.

"We are actively looking for another saftey as right now because of that cut back. I don't know how many top in state student will pay $10,000 to go there instead of much better schools."

With all due respect, you are admitting that Ohio State is nothing more than a "safety" to your daughter. Look elsewhere if that's all you think of the school. You'll be doing yourself, your daughter and Ohio State a favor in the process. Quite frankly, this seems like a clear case of a situation where Ohio State should just simply reject your daughter outright in the first place seeing as there's little chance of her actually enrolling. Hell, play the Duke/Wash. U game; it's no different than the game you're attempting play.

I wish your daughter well.

sh60614, thanks for the due respect, LOL..

If you went back to my old posts, you will find that I push so very hard for DD to consider OSU. One of the biggest reason is the "Distinguished NMF scholarship". Now that is reduced, the attraction is less.

It is a business decison. The COA for OSU is about $20,000. If you got no aid at all, and your EFC is about $20,000 for any other top rated schools, what will you do?

Because the "Distinguished NMF scholarship" now they listed as only possible for a NM finalist, that gives us am impression we may not get even that.

We have received so many letters from 60 - 100th ranked schools promising a minimum of 100% tuition for NMF. Would you consider those if you are not sure about one penny from OSU?

sh60614 needs to cut back on the caffeine.

I don't see anything wrong with DadII's thought process. I had the same one. My DS was a NMF and our EFC was astronomical compared with our financial realities. Frankly, the Distinguished Scholarship was the final selling point. DS liked the size and diversity of OSU and wanted to go there, but frankly, it was a safety school for him as well. I imagine that for many of the NM and Honors kids, it is a safety school. I guess I don't see that as a knock on the school, just an observation that the student might be among the more highly qualified applicants (which OSU wants to attract).

In our case, it was a match school in terms of curriculum, opportunity, diversity, size, cost and countless other factors affecting our decision. But from an acceptance/academic qualification point of view, it was a safety school. So what?

It still turned out to be the best choice for us.

It wasn't caffeine, but a case of a little too much wine and scotch at dinner earlier in the evening. Apologies were sent to Dad II and the moderator first thing Saturday morning. I'd remove the rest of the post if I could still edit it.

Sorry to all who have read it.

Yes, sh60614 is a good person and I did express my appreciation for his/her contribution to the forum.

If we could meet now, I would give him/her a big hug if it were allowed. Of course, I will be wearing an Illinois sweater for the time being. LOL

Happy thanksgiving everyone.

DO we have any one who has got the good news from OSU yet?

I'm still under evaluation... I believe the first time there will be "news," good or bad, will be the first week of December.

DadII,
There is nothing wrong with weighing a merit offer from OSU vs. other schools where your D might be admitted. When that award is less than it has been previously, it makes the out-of-pocket question a bit more relevant.

We know many kids who have made the same calculations -- excellent flagship w/merit vs. Ivy or other top tier. Some take the full ride quite happily and do extremely well; others do likewise at the top school. I know that at our HS, some very excellent schools lose out in head-to-head vs. the flagship come April.

We know of many people who found themselves surprised at the end of the day to be taking the state school option over other top schools. The kids I've talked to said that it was because the state schools really showed they wanted these kids and worked hard to attract their interest from the summer before senior year until the day the kids made a final decision. These kids also said that some of the privates were hot to recruit them, but once the app was sent in, they never heard another word from the school until the letters came. The kids felt duped and dumped.

What I recommended to my son is that he play out the string: apply to his full list, bust his tail on merit opportunities, don't drop schools once he hears about EA, and we'll sit down in April and start considering the full range of options. Flagships know that the top students will have some great options; the savvy ones know how to sell the advantages of their school.

P.S. If D has better scores from this fall, go ahead and send them in. Can't hurt; might help.

It's driving me crazy to keep waiting. OSU is my first choice. I'm already in at Indiana U. But I'd rather be a Buckeye!! Has anyone found out since Thanksgiving?

they dont even start releasing until december
