Hi, I’m starting to get ready packing and going shopping for things I’ll need at Davis. What are some things you think is absolutely necessary in Davis. And by things I mean stuff for dorms, clothes, etc. Especially things specifically for fall quarter!!!

Oh, and I heard it rains alot in Davis and it can get pretty cold. Would I need to buy rain jacket & pants? And do I need some thick clothes for the cold?

Sry, I live in SoCal and don’t really have alot of “winter” clothes.

As for the weather, I’m an hour away so I’m sorta used to it. Definitely bring rain stuff for the winter. It can get pretty cold, but not snowing cold. If your from SoCal, then the weather will definitely take some getting used to. The weather can be pretty unpredictable, i.e. sunny when supposed to be rainy, but I guess it’s okay to be prepared.

yes, you will definitely need cold weather gear!!! it gets VERY COLD in davis!! especially form a southern california perspective–it’s just warmer down here. get a real coat, some real rain boots, an umbrella, and maybe some longjohns/thermal tops to layer with your southern california tees. and winter hits earlier up there, so buy your stuff fairly soon. i think my son said winter started kicking in around mid-october/early november; in southern cal we’re still in beach weather/ ‘indian summer’ during that time of year.

so don’t get caught in the cold, and happy shopping!

Sorry to be the nosey weather police, but sure it’s colder on average than So Cal but it’s not like it gets THAT cold. I swear people in California would not last 5 seconds anywhere else in the US during the winter. :P

haha yeah, “VERY COLD”? no. t shirt hoodie jeans = fine for the cold. on rainy days a lot of people would wear rain boots and waterproof pants but i wore jeans and sneakers, tshirt, hoodie, maybe a rain jacket. oh and make sure to have a plastic bag on hand for your bike seat if it’s absorbent like that. and a fender.

I like to think of it this way. If you’ve driven a Lamborghini all your life and then you get a Beemer you’ll be like “Wow this really sucks”. But a Beemer ain’t no broken down Geo Metro.

Waterproof pants are, uhh, just that–waterproof! They’re also known as rain pants and aren’t very hard to find online. Track pants will be water resistant, but certainly not waterproof. A lot of rain pants are meant to go over the pants you’re already wearing, so you can go outside in the rain and avoid getting soaked, then just pull them off and continue your day.

If you are bringing a bike, you need a good lock and a mud guard over the back tires.
It’s called the “freshman stripe” when students try to ride a bike without that in the rain and end up with water and mud all over their backs.

Lol, thanks guys. this is all super helpful. :)

I just got a rain jacket and some nice warm track pants. If it gets to it, I’ll go for those waterproof pants Jonline is talking bout. But kinda having a hard time finding a pair that’ll fit me. Anyone know an actual store where they sell those pants in kids sizes? I need to try them on to make sure they actually fit me.

Oh, just curious. What exactly do you guys mean by rain boots? Are those like literally thoes big yellow plastic boots?
