I will be attending UCD in the Fall. Along with many of my fellow incoming freshmen would like to know what to bring. Any tips from current students and alumus?

shot glass and a blender

Computer (laptop preferable), Speakers+Earphones
Ethernet Cable - They sell em for like $12 for kids who forgot them. There
is not wireless in the dorms!!
Pencil Sharpener
Clothe Hangers
Lock for bathroom locker (Regan uses these)
lots of body wash/shampoo
lots of money for books or a credit card
make sure you have ATM card -Golden1/Bank of America/First Northern
have ATM machines on campus
you can bring a bike if you want but there is an auction around October
where they auction bikes for like 10-20 bux
Earplugs - good for library and if your roommate are loud/snores

that's all I can think of now, but if your forget anything you can still buy it here.

There are also stores right across from campus (Cost Plus, Rite Aid and Gottshalks) that provide a variety of things that you might not have wanted to cart from home. Stores like Target and Walmart are in Woodland (about 10 miles away) for other cheap dorm room items.

Good backpack that doesn't give you a back ache at the end of the day.
Water bottle - a $3-5 polycarbonate hiking bottle will do the job for water or any other drink mix you might want.
Pencil lead - if you use a mechanical pencil.
Hi-liters - incase you want to mark your books or make a banner.
CDs/DVDs - if your into burning them.
someone said umbrella in another thread in the general college forum.

Might want to check the parents forums or general and look at the checklists and sugestions they have. They have good reasons for what they choose.

Although you might want to check with your roommate(s) to see if they have either item, a dorm fridge and microwave are pretty handy. Also, socal folks seem to think Davis gets cold in the winter so if you are from socal, you might consider a warmer jacket than what we usually wear. There are a couple of REI stores in the sac area for those looking for good gear to wear while riding a bike in bad weather.

Oh....I know this one won't be popular but a bike helmet is a good idea. Last time I was in the med center ER, the patient next to me was a UCD student that had just gotten into a bike accident and had significant head injuries. The call to his dad to tell him that his son might not be taking his finals the next week is a call that no parent wants to get. Sorry...once in awhile I have to play my mom card. There are so many "new" bike riders on campus in the fall that it gets very dangerous. There are lots of traffic bumps on campus that can be missed (but good for launching human missles) when you are biking in a cloud of fellow students (okay...it was one of the manhole covers that launched me when I was an undergrad at UCD).

A bike helmet is definately a good idea, but nobody else wears one -just depends on you. I had a semi-major bike accident my winter quarter -going pretty fast and hit a curb at a wrong angle and hit the cement at like 10-15mph. I messed up both of my wrists (was in a cast and then splints on both arms up to shoulders for two weeks!), but I didn't wear a helmet and I slammed my cheekbone on the ground but luckily I was ok. If you ride slowly (unlike the crazy maniac me) you will probably not need a helmet, but you must ride slowly (>10mph)!!! Come to think of it...I've been in like 4 or 5 accidents but that's basically because I'm a maniac. And bring a screwdriver or some other tools b/c you may have to fix your bike (or if you're really lazy you can take it to the Bike Shop)

Also, Microwave and Fridge are basically a must. In my dorm (Regan area) there's basically a humongous empty space if you don't have a fridge and then a fridge on top of it. It's very useful b/c The Junction has a lot of food that requires microwave (pizza pockets/lean cuisine/etc for those days you're busy or don't want to go to the DC). Make sure someone brings one of each or rent one if you guys have to.

dont forget a bike

A fridge is not included???

*Great info./links for future students (in this thread).

Hey just for your info, the Rite Aid in davis is WAAAAAAY overpriced.

fooshy

^^^ Lol, thanks for the tip fooshy.

So there's no fridge or microwave included?!? What a rip...

To socialize, it might be a good idea to bring a tv and games. Not expensive ones like gears of war or w/e but perhaps a n64 and goldeneye so you and other people on the floor can hang out.

Then what is the closest supermarket?

Albertsons is the closest. Nugget is twice as far but 10 times better. There is also a Safeway. But to answer your question Albertsons is the closest.

^Are they all over-priced too?

I dont know about overpriced but I know that Safeway is the most expensive out of the three.
