Academic Area of interest?

On the common app should you only express interest in specific majors offered at that particular university?
For instance, say I'm interested in a pre-law kind of education however xyz university doesn't offer pre-law as a major so I would probably take something like "philosophy, politics and economics" or another major special to that school. Should I still put pre-law or just something like philosophy even though it's only part of the major?

IMO, if you indicate a major rather than undecided, it should be a major the college offers. Otherwise, you risk having someone think that you don’t know what majors are offered.

So academic interests would be the same as major then?
I have three different tracks I’m interested in (neuroscience, law, and marketing-yes very different and weird I know) but I haven’t decided which is best for me. Should I just put undecided then?

What if a major that you’re applying for at one university is unavailable at another.

When my daughter applied to colleges, she was looking at Russian, German, Japanese, and physics–also kind of different. She kind of mixed things around a bit depending on the college. With law, you can major in just about anything. The other two are more specific. I did misunderstand what you were asking.

I think that you might best express your diverse interests in your essay. We really try to get young people to say what they want right away, but for most it is probably better to try some different classes. I don’t know whether that is the least bit helpful…

Haha thanks MD Mom, it was helpful, I agree that using the essay to express my interests will probably be most effective. Thanks!
