Academic Calendar and Holidays

I know that there is an academic calendar on the UVA website, but it does not list any holidays (besides Thanksgiving). Do we get federal holidays off from classes like Labor Day and Columbus Day and MLK Day? If so, is there somewhere I can find out which ones are included? Thanks!

Here is another calendar to have for a reference. Many students go home on reading days.

Thanks for the quick replies! So when it says “closed”, there aren’t any classes (just making sure)?

University Holiday, Martin Luther King Day [NO CLASSES TODAY] > That means no classes for a holiday. Most schools don’t take off for the holidays outside the “major” ones (Christmas, Thanksgiving, the Fourth)

Recess, Reading Days, and Break all mean no classes. Recess is usually the long-term breaks, Reading Days are shorter breaks (i.e. Fall Reading Days, RDs before exams, etc). They use RD instead of “break” because you really don’t ever get a break ;)

Colleges try not to give off too many individual days because it really screws up the lab and discussion section schedules.

My fourth year we started on a Tuesday or Wednesday and had the following Monday off too. Due to this, two Monday classes in a row would’ve been skipped, and we had Inauguration Day in there. They ended up having to have Monday classes on a Friday, Thursday classes on a Thursday, and some other whacky combination. Total PITA, especially since one of my professors didn’t get the memo and didn’t schedule a lab for the make-up day and then another forgot to show up to class at all. Students were just as confused and homework was a big toughie for the back to back W/F classes

I think the University never did that scheme again for obvious reasons…
