This might be a stupid question, but does Cornell rest on days such as Presidents' Day and Veterans' Day? I checked on the academic calendar and I don't recall any indication of a break on these dates.

the school of industrial and labor relations had classes on labor day ... ***?

I dont think Cornell gets holidays off. I could be wrong. If you need a day off, just dont go to class. It's what i do! :)

darn. Me likes holidays.

Who doesnt?

Based on the 2005-06 academic calendar at http://www.cornell.edu/academics/calendar/,
Cornell only recognizes:

10/9-11 Fall Break
11/24-27 Thanksgiving Break
12/17-26 Christmas Holiday Break between Fall & Winter Sessions
3/18-26 Spring Break

Cornell may indirectly recognize Thanksgiving (Thursday & Friday), Christmas & New Years Day, Dr. MLK Day (no classes but is college technically open), Easter Sunday and Memorial Day.

Cornell does not officially recognize Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, President's Day or Good Friday, but some professors may cancel classes for the day.

Private schools typically don't recognize a lot of "public" holidays.

yeah you've got the link to the academic calendar.

The policy at cornell is that your professors are obligated to recognize any religious or other significant holiday conflicts in terms of allowing you to miss class on those days as long as you tell them. You might be able to hand in your work a day or 2 late, as well, or just have a friend bring it in for you. The set breaks are good, because other holidays would just force the same amount of material to be taught in a smaller number of classes. If you want a holiday, just don't go to class that day.

And yes, occasionally your professor will cancel classes, though not necessarily for just holidays.

Besides, honestly, how many of you were planning a serious celebration of Labor Day and Presidents' Day? yeah that's right, you just wanted to sleep in and drink an extra day.

Yeah, back in the day, when I was at a Jesuit college 2300 miles from home, I forgot that some of these holidays even existed.

And we only got 3 school days off for spring break.

yeah sometimes i forget about holidays too, but i have to say I think it's a good system not having random days off here and there. it avoids confusion, and like i said, having days off just reduces the number of lectures in your course which means you're responsible for more material on your own.

but yeah, i def think it's funny how i sometimes would forget national holidays and stuff had I not loaded them into my outlook calendar.

4 days off in the fall, 5 in the spring.

Yum. That's hardcore.

up to 6 weeks in the middle of winter...a couple months in the summer. plus when it says classes end on saturday, they really end thursday or friday afternoon it's not so bad.

you're your own boss in college...if you have a distinct urge not to go to class one day, you don't need mommy's approval anymore.

Nice! Hoorah for independence. :)

you could have skipped in high school. skipping has repercussions both in high school and in college. i wouldn't advise skipping in college because it is really fast paced compared to hs. missing one week is really detrimental in college, unlike in hs.

yeah but skipping in high school for some of us involved detention and other annoying stuff like that.

a lot of people skipped in hs and just asked their parents to write notes for them, so nothing happened to them at all.

my point exactly...you don't need your parents approval anymore.

Will Cornell ever give a day off if there is a ton of snow? Come to think of it, does Cornell ever get big blizzards like us over in New England, or is it just small lake effect snows?

nope. they will only close down the school if there is a serious blizzard, something that have not done for years.
