All right, so I'm sure all of you college confidentialists have done their research and found that WashU claims to be school with great academic flexibility when it comes to taking classes in different schools (and even double majors, for that matter). However, I am curious about the potential for a freshman engineering student to take advantage of the first year program, "Medicine and Society." The 2010 viewbook lists this program under Arts/Sci, but does anyone have any experience with a situation such as this?

Medicine and Society is actually a 4 year program. You have to apply and be accepted for it, and only some 20-odd students are accepted every year.

However, that does not mean that you can’t take the same exact classes (except perhaps the intro course).

I have no clue though if you have to be in Art/Sci primarily to apply though. I’d email the anthro department for more information.

^ That notes that you have to state your interest when you send in your acceptance notification/housing/all that fun stuff.

Uh oh…I already replied to my early decision acceptance offer in December! I was really more interested in the guaranteed internship at “a community health site” which the 2010 viewbook states. Thanks for the reply!

If you’re really interested in something like that, getting an internship shouldn’t be a problem. There are so many opportunities that it can’t be all that competitive.

I am not familiar with this program, but just email and ask.
You can change your primary school affiliation if you decide that it suits you better even before the beginning of the school year, or you can pursue majors and/or degrees at both schools (engineering and arts&sci)
