<p>It means being a professor at a medical school. It usually involves laboratory research, patient care, and having students follow you around while you perform said patient care.</p>

<p>I don’t know what you mean. If you mean being an independent physician who keeps a laboratory in his basement, then I suppose you’re right. That would not be considered academic medicine.</p>
