Academic Probation/Dismissal

I finished my first semester at CAL and I am in the College of Chemistry and got a 1.91 gpa. Does anyone know if that leads to Academic Probation or is it automatic dismissal???

They are on break right now, so you may get an email within the next couple of weeks. They can’t just automatically dismiss you without giving you a chance to prove yourself.

They admitted you and don’t want you to fail their school.

A student needs to maintain an overall UC grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or better and earn a GPA each semester of 2.0 or higher. Students are subject to dismissal if at the end of any single semester their overall UC grade point average falls below a 2.0 or if their UC semester grade point average is below a 2.0.

At the end of each semester, the records of all students subject to dismissal are reviewed. Advisers encourage students to write a letter explaining the nature of their difficulties and their plans to return to good academic standing to be included in their file at time of review. After careful review of the file, the College determines whether a student is dismissed or continued on probation.

Your GPA is not too low. I hope they will put you on probation. Prepare to write a letter.

You will be put on Academic Probation. I have had friends in the same condition as you. Make sure to retake one course in which you got an F or low grade if you know that you can do better. Make sure to take courses that would make it possible for you to come back Fall 2016. You won’t be able to take any courses Pass Or No pass. Good luck

Academic Probation

Students in the College of Chemistry will be placed on academic probation and subject to dismissal from the University:

If at the end of any term they failed to attain at least a C average (2.0) for the courses in which they were enrolled for that term; or
If at the end of any term they failed to maintain at least a C average (2.0) overall for all courses taken at the University

Students on academic probation are placed under the supervision of the Undergraduate Dean. They may not take courses on a passed/not passed basis, with the exception of recreational physical education courses and courses offered only on a passed/not passed basis.

If you got any D or F grades, you may want to repeat those courses for higher grades, since the first 12 units of repeated courses allows replacement of the D or F grades with the new grades when calculating your GPA.
