Academic Scholarships

Hey, I was wondering how common non-need based scholarships are, and some of the different qualifications for them. Have you heard of students getting a full-ride? Does it effect your chances if you are from out of state???

The Office of Admissions does not offer academic scholarships. They do offer race-based scholarships and a handful of "hardship" scholarships, but they have obvious restrictions. This is an obvious area of weakness for us.

The alumni association gives about 30 Jefferson Scholarships each year, which cover the full cost of a four year education at UVA, among other things. The nomination/interview process has already happened, but Peabody Hall might still be giving at-large nominations. If you have HYP credentials, you might be competitive. Otherwise, don't hold your breath.

HYP?

Harvard, Yale and Princeton.

Yeahhh I made second round for Jeff Scholars in the Maryland region this year but didn't get to the Selection Weekend thingy at UVA (3rd round). It's really competitive - really really competitive.

And it's not numbers. The numbers just get you to be nominated. It's all about like personality, attitude, goals, motivation... that good sorta stuff.

would a 780 math, 780 CR, 3.95 GPA "get me in the door"?

It would certainly get you a look, but at-large nominations for the Jefferson Scholars competition are hard to come by. As I said, think HYP credentials.

Otherwise, you will not receive merit aid from the admissions office.

Where do you live?

Yeah you had to have checked with your counselor about JeffScholars way back in Octoberish to see if you could get a school nomination or an at large (depends on what your school was allowed to do)

Besides the Jefferson Scholarship, the Alumni Association also offers a host of other scholarships based on a number of criteria.
