Academic suspension appeal letter feedback please??

Good day Mr. XXX,

I am a Biology Major here at Nova Southeastern University on the main campus in Ft; Lauderdale, FL .I am writing to you in the hopes of an appeal the decision of my academic suspension. When I received the news of my suspension I was very discouraged, but understood completely the circumstances under which the decision was made. My low GPA failed to meet the requirements of the university to remain an active student on campus, which as a result led to my temporary suspension. I take full responsibility for my actions and realize that I am at fault for being in this position. Throughout the duration of my freshman year and Fall 2019, I endured many trials and tribulations that gravely affected my academic performance. I wish wholeheartedly that the turn of events that occurred this past year were different but that is not possible and I feel the need to explain myself and the reasoning behind my Insubstantial GPA.

Receiving my acceptance letter from NSU was one of the greatest milestones I achieved in my life so far. I was so happy and so excited to call myself a Shark and was pleased that I had been accepted to the number 1 school of my choice. However, things began to take an unpleasant turn starting with my car accident in my first semester at NSU. I was a part of the D.O. 4+4 program also but because of my slightly lower GPA in my first term I missed it by .2 to stay in the program. I was taking pain medication and missed some classes because of my therapy however, I ended the semester with goals to reapply to the program. In Winter 2019, I got into a second accident where a lady hit my car and it was totaled, which my mother sorted out with the insurance and got our money back. I wanted to take summer term of 2019 to look towards graduating early so I registered for it. However, I was unaware that all my scholarships did not apply to summer term so I was put in debt with my mother which is my main source of financial aid other than scholarships. I submitted a SAP appeal and was put on an academic plan with my advisor to retake Biology 2, Trigonometry and Statistics which would put my GPA at 3.5 when I graduate in two years time. I also started making plans and a study plan to take my MCAT in the summer of 2021.

In the past semester of Fall 2019, I started the semester off wonderfully. I turned in my assignments, went to office hours, and had A’s in my classes. However towards the second half of the semester, I came down with reoccurring tonsillitis in which I went to a family doctor and got my classes excused by Disabilities Services. I spoke to the heads of the literature and ethics departments to receive accommodations for my work and out of all my professors, my literature professor worked with me and I was able to turn in my work to her, however I made plans with my professors to finish any tests in the Testing Center in January from my Trig and Ethics classes and submit a change of grade form which will improve my GPA.

My past two terms was not Ideal for me and brought me to my breaking point and back. I made many mistakes that I’ve learned from since then, and have every intention of putting my best foot forward. If I were to be given this second chance and be reinstated for next semester there would be a world of difference between my previous grades and the grades that I would be receiving next semester. I have devised a plan to make sure that I reach academic success. I have already taken the first step by talking to my retention director, Laura Barry, which helped me with options and mentored me and after I met her my grades started slowly improving. Continuation of this would get me to the academic goal I need to make. I would take fewer credits (12) until I have my GPA back on track, retake the classes that I did poorly in such as Bio 2 and Trigonometry, make weekly visits to the tutoring and testing program, make sure that I visit my professor’s during their office hours, and last, but certainly not least make sure I receive counseling or talk to someone if I need advice in keeping my grades on track.

Attending NSU is a privilege and it is not my right and I have an opportunity that most kids would never even dream of by being able to say that I am in the process of obtaining a college degree. I know just how fortunate I am to be a student of this institution even though it has not been reflected in my grades thus far. If reinstated I will go above and beyond all measures to prove myself and show the real student that I am and the potential that I have. My education is everything to me and I know that continuing my studies at NSU is what I need to reach my pinnacle of success in life and I am willing to fight for it and do whatever is necessary to get back on track towards a successful future. Thank you so much in advance for taking the time to read my letter.

Regards,

XXX

Way, way too long.

I suggest you do a very brief, one or two sentence recap of the car accidents and tonsillitis. Focus the rest of your appeal on this part of your letter:

Good luck.
