Hi guys I just found out that I will be suspended from school after this semester, I just finished out my first full year as a transfer student and was not surprised by this suspension because of my issue last semester. I am now writing an appeal letter and would like for some of you to look over it for me please! I need it as perfect as possible because i do not want to be removed from school at all.
Here are the questions I have to respond to:
(While there is no minimum length, most petitions average around one page).
A. What do you want to accomplish here at XX and in the future?
B. What things in the previous semester most contributed to your academic performance and current academic standing? (Briefly describe what made it difficult for you to be successful).
C. For what reasons would you not take summer courses at XXXX to improve your GPA?
D. What will you do differently during the next semester if you are reinstated?
(List specific resources on campus you will utilize in order to be successful).
My letter is exactly 1 page and as requested by my advisor has been revised to this copy.
My biggest concern is getting my college career back on track so I can focus on the task at hand. Through all of the obstacles I have faced, I am looking forward to accomplishing all the goals that I am setting in place. This letter is in reference to my petition to the university and showing that I still have what it takes to be the model student that I agreed to be according to our student code of conduct. Positivity, success, and an education I can depend on are many of the things that I look forward to accomplishing at XXXX and in my near future.
I understand the severity of this situation and the mistakes that I have made. Looking back at this situation proves otherwise; although at the time, it felt like the right thing to do. In my previous semester, I was assigned a roommate who showed great promise. It was not until the last part of September that I found out about her mental conditions, suicide attempts, and depression. I have never been in such a situation like this before, and it took a toll on my grades and life. I then began to lose touch with my education. Soon she started losing control and stopped going to class. She would smoke in our room, come home high off different hallucinogen drugs, party all night, and come in early in the morning deliberately waking me out of my sleep asking for “help”. After a few discussions, she told me she would get back on her medications and go back to her therapist which was provided by the school. Eventually, she began to self-harm again, leading me to take her to the ER every other week. She also began again to come into our room late at night extremely intoxicated while I would be studying, and I would have to help her shower and clean up messes she made because she could not manage. These are just a few incidents that went on for over a period of about eight weeks with no assistance from anyone. I constantly tried to alert specific individuals of this problem, but it was not until I got in touch with her parents did she get admitted into the hospital and withdrawn from school.
I never wanted to be in a situation of this degree but I did learn a valuable life lesson and I believe that I did the right thing by staying in that room, helping her, and even possibly saving her life. The reason I would not take summer classes at XXXX would be due to cost, and that is the exact issue as of now. Being that I am an out of state transfer student the three classes I need are too expensive, forcing me to possibly take out a student loan so I can afford them. This is why I am hoping for the committee to give me the chance to come back in fall so I can then prove myself as a good student; also showing that I can make the grades.
I know these past two semesters have been a struggle because I am trying to transition all of my efforts to move forward and prepare for this summer. If I am reinstated, I am hoping to do everything different. As of now I am consulting with my parents about an apartment that I can rent out so I can have complete concentration at all times. I will also plan to not make everyone’s problems my problem, set a goal to start a study group for the classes I struggle in, consistently go to our campus libraries to study and do some work between classes, get in touch with tutors available for my major, and lastly keep XXXX on top by attributing to the schools success and exceed all expectations.
I own up completely to the mistakes and decisions I chose to make, going to the complete limit to correct them. I want to increase my chances to come back in fall as much as I possibly can. I have been in constant contact with my Professors and advisor, and have brought my GPA and grades up a great deal. I guarantee it that my goal is more than possible with hard work and dedication. As stated, by Rachael Griffith, “there is nothing as exciting as a comeback – seeing someone with dreams, watching them fail, and then getting a second chance.”
