Pakjan, you can go to stateuniversity.com and rank them according to your choice of criteria. I’d start with SAT score as the criterion; their “overall” rankings are a little odd in some cases. You also can look up these schools on the US News site, or on the Princeton Review site.

There are many different ways to rank colleges, depending on what criteria you apply.
Average SATs, average class size, selectivity, faculty salaries, peer assessment rankings, 6-year graduation rates, etc. Different services and different individuals weigh these factors in different ways.

*Elon gets a lot of hype for some reason i think its overrated…i can’t name a program that is distinguished at elon…and its not a liberal arts college.

I would agree with the OP on the first two schools:

Tulane

Furman (this is a really underrated LAC)

Clemson

Virginia Tech

Elon

FSU

Charleston

JMU

I think Tulane at #1, Furman at #2 and JMU last is pretty solid ranking but you can probably argue about the schools ranked #3-#7 and make a case for moving each around. It also depends upon the major.

Now of course, the 10 pt. spread between Furman and Tulane is insignificant. There are much more important differences between them. But it would appear (based on SATs alone) that these two are significantly more selective than the rest.

So why do some posters not rank Furman higher? Maybe because, as JEZ points out, it’s a really underrated LAC.

Example: Boone Pickens’ daughter goes to OSU and she is the most incredibly idiotic person in the world. Her high school gpa was 2.5 which you have to have a 3.2 in order to get in if your OOS. Boone Pickens happens to be OSU’s largest donor…as well as the largest donor in collegiate history.

-Tulane
-Elon
-Furman
-Virginia Tech
-College of Charleston
-Clemson
-Florida State
-James Madison

Just my preferences …

I like Elon best but it’s not as prestigious, so lower it goes…

PS: Elon is one of two very good LAC in NC (Ok, now it’s got a few graduate programs so it’s a University) does that make in a LAU… (other LAC is Davidson)

It depends what you are studying. If you are looking at studying engineering, Clemson and Virginia Tech would be the place to go. If you want a liberal arts education, then Furman and College of Charleston would be a good choice. If you want great communications or business programs, then James Madison or Elon. If you want a great pre-med program, then Tulane is the place to go.
