Academy of Art University (AAU)

I just want to know more about its reputation, student life, student work, its recognitions, life in San Francisco,
or anything from your opinions and from what you have heard, so, I can make a decision about applying or not.

I'm interested in Advertising and Motion Graphics graduate programs.
(I haven't choose which program to apply)

Since I have heard that it has the good facilities like computer labs as well as the instructors are from Pixar, etc.
Plus, it's interesting that AAU doesn't require a portfolio for admission which is good for me
who don't graduate from BFA (but from Computer Science which is not related to Arts at all)

Any comments and suggestions are welcome. :)

I've heard good things...I was thinking of applying there a few years back and did a ton of research. If you search through forums like wetcanvas and cgsociety.org there are threads that literally go on for 5 years about AAU

fwiw, I haven't heard great things about the ad major, but all my search is about two years out of date now, good luck

thanks to you, schoolz4losers. :)

I might be going there in the fall if my plan A doesn't work out. Granted, I intend to be an Acting major, but I can tell you that I have heard both good and bad things about all of the departments. I really think it is what you make of it, just like pretty much anything else. They do have good industry contacts.

Also, San Francisco is a really cool city. Lots of different people and lots of things to do - you'd never be bored. Plus there's a lot of other neat cities within an hour or so away(definitely check out Santa Cruz if you go). The only downside is that there are a LOT of homeless and there are certain areas you would want to avoid after sunset.

thanks a lot musicmind11 ^__^

I'm working hard for searching the information to decide
which program I really want to fit in.

As you mentioned about the industry contact and the characteristic of the city, I think they are also good factors to consider.

And if my plan (or my mind) isn't changed, I have an intention to go there in Spring 2009.
Hope to see you!

Interestingly, I too have heard good things about AAU as being an up-in-coming school and having up-in-coming programs. HOWEVER, up-in-coming can be far away from "there." Many other schools have a lot more alumni who are situated in hiring positions that AAU may not have yet.

In addition, I think that they take anyone and everyone, being a for-profit endeavor. This may weigh negatively against you in the minds of potential recruiters. In addition, schools that have "low" admission standards tend to have very tough grading. You should check into this at AAU,which could hurt you for any potential grad school.
