Academy of Art University and Art Institutes

I'd like to know what people think about these schools. I'm not creating this post for advice about choosing art colleges, but I'm just curious about what people think of these schools. The general consensus I get is that these schools aren't that great and are looked down upon a lot. I have my own opinions about the schools but I'm really interested in what others have to say about them particularly in regards to the curriculum and how art is taught there.

I have not heard anything good about Art Institutes nor have I seen many good reviews about them. However, I also haven’t interviewed all their graduates either…

As for Academy of Art University in S.F, the reviews have been very mixed. I have seen some student work that looked fabulous. They have a good reputation for their animation program. However, I have met a number of their students and was not impressed with almost all that I met.

I would strongly suggest that you read reviews about the school and visit it.

Those art institutes are everywhere it seems. It appears that they are a very large business with many schools as the “chains” The one thing that I like about them is the selection of online classes. For many people the only way they can actually go to school is on the web, and that is a huge asset. The reason that these schools are not so highly praised may be because of that impression that they are out to pump out grads and make money, but honestly what school is not in it to make some cash. Just look at the athletic programs compared to art in any school that has a decent/popular football team.

As for the curriculum. It depends on what you want to study whether or not this is a good school for you. As for technical classes, such as drafting or other classes that involve computer skills, their online classes are great for this. If though you are looking for studio classes for fine art curriculum, look around some more. For studio work having a professor looking over your shoulder and classmates that are challenging themselves at a high level is important. The truth is that school is what you make of it, but having an enlightened staff that will help you to learn how to truly express yourself is worth doing some research.
