Acapella Groups

Hello,

Does anyone have any information on Wellesley's acapella groups - particularly about the Widows, Blue Notes, and Tupelos? How hard is it to get into these groups? What if I have no experience in music whatsoever but just enjoy singing? (For instance, I don't even know how to site read, and I've never played an instrument or been in chorus, etc.) Any information at all would be greatly appreicated. Thank you!

I had musical experience in high school coming into Wellesley, but I found out the hard way that it can be pretty tough to get into acapella groups on campus when there are incoming students flowing in with years of singing experience under their belts. But that being said, there are always other options if acapella doesn’t work.

Wellesley has other music courses and lessons available. After a frustrating experience with acapella groups, I decided to take a group voice lesson, and it was fun. I also took a music theory class, which was a nice compliment to the more difficult science courses I was taking at the time.

There are also two other groups you didn’t mention in your post, and that’s Awaken the Dawn and the MIT/Wellesley Toons. Awaken the Dawn is a more christian-oriented group, but the MIT/Wellesley Toons are pop-based. I have some good friends who were/are part of the Toons, and they absolutely love it. It’s a pain to go off campus for practicing occasionally, but that is another group that would love to have more female singers (I think all of theirs graduated haha).

But before I sound like a complete Debbie Downer, I’ll finish my response with a more positive note. You should definitely audition! The auditions are fun, the acapella ladies are very welcoming and friendly. And if it doesn’t work out the first time, keep trying. :)
