Accelerated Medical Program

what do u guys feel about the BU seven year program let's say in comparison to MIT or UC Berkeley or John Hopkins BME? How's the undergrad experience at BU?

senior0007...did you get into MIT, UC Berkley, and JHU BME?

I got into MIT and JHU too (I'm assuming those are your other choices). I guess I have been asking around and everyone is saying that they have had a very positive experience at BU SMED. I guess it depends on what you want out of your college experience. If you want a smaller environment within a larger university, then SMED is great. But if you want a greater flexibility of classes and majors in college that maybe SMED won't fit that because of the 7 yr constraint and the 3 yr undergrad.
From what I am hearing, the vast majority of the SMEDs are very happy that they picked it over some very competitive programs and institutions. They didn't have to worry about applying to med school after 4 yrs and go through the very tiresome process of med school interviews and selections.

krikey07: I am going to the Open House too!! I look forward to meeting you all!!

yeah..i got into those places :) sooo...desichick....are you leaning more to mit or bu smed, is mit the only other major contender or are you waiting to hear back from other med programs? and i assume you're indian..hence the name desichick and are you going to mit cpw?

Senior0007:
yup I'm indian!! (are you indian?)
I'm pretty much torn between MIT, BU SMED, and Brandeis. They all gave reallt good packages and their programs are awesome as well!!

And I'm going to CPW! I'll see you there!

wow you all got into really great schools...congrats!
how were your financial aid packages/merit? I haven't heard back yet but I heard BU doesn't give very much.

i got a merit scholarship and a bunch of loans ;(

hey everyone...yeah im in! i was surprised and read my letter over again hahah...but how many ppl r going to the open house?? and r most ppl gonna stay on the special floor for the med program kids or jus all over the place? looking foreward to meeting everyone...apar

I wish we could live in brownstones haha that would be so sweet... but the warren tower seemed okay...except the girl said theres throwup after the weekends in the bathrooms...but im guessing thats not unusual at college.
is there any way we could live in the honors house? or are we not honors?

yeah I was wondering the same thing about the honors dorms...are we in the honors program?

does anyone know where the suite-style dorms are at..and i also heard that bu books rooms in the hyatt nearby...is that true? that would be straight to live in with ur own bathroom and cleaning service haha

the hyatt is when they run out of housing ... but second semester you get your top pick from the dorms. it's also a long walk away, bu does provide a shuttle though & you have to go to warren for laundry

shelton, myles, & danielson have suite style dorms

is there a facebook group? haha

thanks. so as freshmen we can choose to live at any of them?

desichick... congrats on all your offers....btw, did you even consider caltech or apply there?

thanks senior0007! Congrats to you too!
I didn't consider Caltech because I really just wanted pre-med and something close to home. I guess I didn't really look into tech schools too much ;(

krikey07: I think we're going to have to start a group on facebook!

gupta88: it would be really sweet to have room service in college! we would never have to make our beds again...hahhaha

Join the group guys!!

Hi All,

Would be nice if all of you mentioned where you are from. My S applied initially to the 7 year BA-MD program, and changed it to regular premed at the very last moment (due to the requirement of one humanities recommendation letter for BA-MD. Both his reco letters were from Science teachers).

He is accepted at Premed CAS with 50% schol. but is actually interested in a traditional MD. I see a lot of desis on this site. 8-)

I expect all premeds get housed in Warren. It would be good if all prospective students meet up on April 20th.

Momof2011 from NJ

Congrats to your S Pharmagal. 50% scholarship is awesome!

Hi Desichick

Thanks! Are you a NJ'ite as well?

University scholarship (50% ride) is not bad at all. Since my S was so hung up on Ivys when he initially applied, he never even bothered to apply for Trustee scholorship.

Last week has been the lowest low he has ever experienced in his entire life, as I am sure is the case for many other kids.

Had he applied to Trustee, I suspect he may have got 100% ride but..........hindsight is always 20/20. I am happy with 50%.

I wonder though if there is a chance to get on the Trustee list anytime after completion of the first year?

heyyy im in too! name's arvind and im one of the gazillion desis who seem to have gotten in hahahaa anyway who all's going to the open house? i think i am. and ya i did ask the first years about the housing and they say we should go for warren towers and some premed specialty residence in that so yeah(:
