Accelerated Medical Programs

As many of you know, many colleges have programs that guarantee admission to medical school right out of high school (assuming that you meet various criteria such as GPA, MCAT, etc.), such as Northwestern's HPME, Brown's PLME, and Rochester's REMS. Do I have a good shot at any accelerated medical program?

I can get good recommendations

My dad's an ER doctor, if that means anything. His close friend was President of the American College of Emergency Physicians and has "connections" at the University of Rochester. He could put in a word for me for REMS.

Admittedly, my weakest area by far is volunteering. How crucial is this factor? Do I need to put in some serious hours at a hospital or something?

Sorry for the edit, my Subject Tests are averages taken from numerous practice tests. I'm taking them in June.

Had to comment on the music thing.

Go tenor sax! It's what I play too. Awesome instrument.

My dad's an ER doctor too. :)

Anyway, your SAT and stuff is all awesome (their average was 710 Verbal and 730 Math), but what have you done in Medicine?

Any research? Yes, I would say you do need to volunteer more, especially for some of the programs you are looking into

buuuummmppp

go to the Multiple Degree Forum, and do a search on all the threads related to the programs you're interested. That'll be far more useful to you.

Commenting on your stats, however...I would say that your SAT and GPA puts you in running for many programs, but I don't see very many activities that would show that you're committed to medicine. Having your dad as an ER doc would really only help in interviews if they ask whether you really know what you're getting into.

If you really want to go the accel. med route, apply to a variety of them, from the least selective to the most. The ones you mentioned (PLME and HPME) are a few of the hardest in the country.

everything is awesome....but you said you didnt have many volunteer hours....but those are the easiest to get out of anything on your appl. It is a great thing if you can get a word in for REMS. And yes, volunteering hrs/research is important if you want to go into med. b/c it shows that you have a passion for medicine.
