Prompt: Everyone belongs to many different communities and/or groups defined by (among other things) shared geography, religion, ethnicity, income, cuisine, interest, race, ideology, or intellectual heritage. Choose one of the communities to which you belong, and describe that community and your place within it. (Approximately 250 words)

Idea: A few friends and I are fans of the TV show LOST. Last year, we convinced a few other people to start watching it, and they got hooked. We kept encouraging other people to watch it and now we've got quite a few people to come to our marathons.

Would that be a risky topic since it basically says I watch a lot of LOST? lol.

It basically depends on how you ‘spin’ it, if you know what I mean. I mean, obviously your idea is quite unique so that is good but you need to get something across to adcoms at UMich (I’m applying there too, so cheers :P). So what if you and others watch LOST? Why does that matter? What is your place within the group?

If you can spin it in a way that exemplifies something about you or just gets a good point across then it could be a cool essay. But if you just say 'I got people to watch LOST and I started it", then I don’t know how much adcoms at UMich can take out of your essay.

BTW, did you finish the first essay prompt? I don’t understand the ‘curriculum’ part of it.

I like the idea (big fan of Lost too), but like ViggyRam said, make sure it gives insight about yourself

Yeah, I was gonna talk about how it’s like a “community” and brings people together. I would probably compare myself to one of the main leader characters on the show.

Viggy, I basically talked about why the major that I picked supports my interests and why UMichigan is a good place for me. “Curriculum” doesn’t really have to be taken literately, but like what’s offered at UMichigan (at least that’s my take on it)

Ok, thanks. And yea, just try to convey something about yourself and show adcoms something about you I guess.
