Acceptance after dismissal

Hello all,

I’m seeking advise.

At the beginning of the fall semester (2014-2015) I was dismissed from my private university for an isolated, disciplinary reason. Previous to this I had never been in trouble before and was very involved at my school. I had a double major and I maintained a <3.7 GPA. Additionally, I was high ranking in student government, a club athlete, member of the mock trial team while working part time. I feel like my application would be competitive at most university around the country, however, I am concerned the dismissal will ‘black list’ me from all of them.

Following my dismissal from the university I returned home and worked 40+ hours a week and also volunteered within my community. As an attempt to continue my studies as soon as possible, during this up coming semester I am taking courses at a local college but i am not matriculated.

If anyone has helpful insight at my chances of getting into another university, or steps I should take to further my chances of getting in, your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Please, only constructive comments.

Sorry for the heart, < 3.7 GPA **

I would guess it comes down to the details of the disciplinary reason. You need to seek advice from professionals.

You have the right to see a copy of your official transcript, which will show exactly how your dismissal is described. Will you plan to commute, or are you looking at residential colleges? You might well be asked to explain the dismissal. Some offenses will obviously be taken more seriously than others. I think that most students are able to move on, following dismissal, if they demonstrate a willingness to “own” their mistakes.

No one is dismissed for an “isolated” disciplinary reason. Dismissal means it was serious, even though you don’t seem to think so, which may be part of the problem.

I had never been in trouble before, how could it not be isolated? I never said it wasn’t serious, I apologize if the tone of my post suggested a trivial or insignificant nature. Trust me, I am more than remorseful, however I turned to this blog for constructive advice on how to more forward.
