Acceptance...Deposit...Confused

So I was accepted acedmically to the university quite some time ago. The paper they mailed me said to mail in a deposit my mid-January. It’s now mid-February and I haven’t mailed back the deposit. The reason I didn’t mail it back is becasue I haven’t heard back yet from My January 23rd MT/Acting Audition. What if I’m not accepted to the program? I don’t want to put a deposit into the school and end up having to go there and not being able to participate in MT or Acting.

What should I do? Did anyone else run into this problem?

It depends if you have other schools you are pretty sure you will get into and would rather go to (non-audition BA schools with theatre). Deposits are typically refundable up to May 1 so you can get your money back after you hear from other schools. Getting a deposit in sometimes gets you better housing because it is done on a first-come first served system. My d was academically accepted at Elon so we sent in a deposit in case she does not get into any of her BFA programs since she may want to go there for a BA in theatre. We can get it back as long as we notify them by May 1 so nothing to lose (just $500 to for over now!) Read the fine print to make sure it is refundable!

My D was accepted to PP both academically and into the MT program but we have yet to send in the deposit. It is indeed refundable up until May 1, but we are hedging our bets as her other schools won’t notify until March. I really hate parting with that $$$ until we’re sure this is what she wants. Do what you feel is best for you…good luck!

Stagemom23 is right. I was in the same situation as you (I got accepted academically and my audition isnt until tomorrow morning) and I asked a Point Park representative who came to my school to make sure. You can get your deposit back as long as you decide by May 1.

I turned mine in justtt in case, to secure a spot.

I am resurrecting this thread from last season, because we are now in the same situation. My D just received her academic acceptance to PP, but her audition (Acting) takes place in January. That will also be her first time visiting the school due to the distance.

The acceptance letter encourages her to make deposit by Dec. 3rd! While the letter does say the deposit is refundable before May 1, it also notes that she should contact her admissions counselor if she is not able to meet the deadline date.

It would be helpful to know what others did or are doing in this situation. Do other schools “encourage” early deposit" upon academic acceptance?

My daughter is currently an MT major at Point Park and LOVES it. She received her academic acceptance early and we sent in her deposit in because it was one of her top choices, even though her audition wasn’t until February. Deposits are fully refundable so there is no risk. I don’t know about getting better housing with an early deposit, there isn’t a box to check specifying where you would like to live. But she loves where she ended up. There are good and bad sides to each of the housing options.

Talekd to kiddo’s admission counsellor today, as her suggested due date for the deposit was today, and she just auditioned on 10/30 (so hasn’t heard artistically yet). He said that not depositing early does NOT jeopardize one’s space at the school, but strongly suggested that we send it ASAP if she receives artistic acceptance, as it does put you in the pool sooner for other admissions stuff – they won’t send housing/registration information w/out it.

We chose to pay the deposit because it is refundable, this school is high on kiddo’s list if accepted, and there are so many details from so many schools, didn’t want to mess up somewhere by missing a deadline/forgetting. But now am wondering what to do with the “Acceptance of Full Time Admissions” form – she doesn’t want to accept unless/until she knows her plans for next year, but also doesn’t want to mess up anything. Nowhere in the letter do we see anything about the acceptance decision being required until 5/1… guess it’s another call to the counsellor…

DD is a current dance major at PPU and is extremely happy (makes a mom happy too). We did not do the early deposits at PPU as they pushed. She got her first choice of dorms, had had no trouble registering, got full academic and talent awards without rushing to do so. She did accept before the May 1 deadline, but this was fter she had heard from all her others schools, academically and financially. So it probably doesn’t hurt to accept early but it did not hurt her to not do so either.

The only place she did an early deposit (that we got back) was a large out of state public university that she loved but did not get nearly the financial aid to even put it in the running - BUT they did not have sufficient dorm space and that was the reason for the deposit.

Beachcomber:
This topic comes up every year on this forum with regard to Point Park. Rather than repeat it all again, here is a link to one such discussion that has taken place here on this matter:

Thanks for replies. PP is my D’s first audition in Jan. Unlike most schools, sounds like admissions is on rolling basis for the artistic acceptance. It makes sense to me to hold off sending a deposit until she receives artistic acceptance. At that point, I’d be willing to pay deposit, while she waits for word from other schools and knowing it is refundable before May 1.

Just know that there is no need to ever give a deposit to Point Park before May 1. That is your right. There is no advantage to giving the deposit. Your child’s spot will be held until May 1 without a deposit. Imagine if every school wanted a deposit prior to May 1. A parent would be tying up a lot of money. Further, the school is encouraging a student to break the rules and to deposit at more than one school which is not right and ties up spots that they may not be taking. Please know your rights to not send a deposit until May 1, at which time a family should deposit at one school only. The college cannot take your child’s spot away until after May 1. The school is making you think you need a deposit to secure your child’s spot but this isn’t so.
