I am going to be a Senior in the Fall. I am also a highly motivated student. I don't need to outline EC's or such, but I scored a 29 on my ACT and comparativly on my SAT with a 760 SAT II.

My question is how hard are honors programs are to get into to. Obviously extremely selective, but for a state school, such as U of M Twin Cities, how hard is admissions for that be? My GPA isn't great... Siting between an A-/B+, and my weighted GPA is a 3.7. Class rank isn't reported. Though I am highly motivated and taken the hardest classes possible and want to challenge myself even further. Is it possible to get into a state honors program like that or another comparative school like that?

Well, thankfully, many honors programs are very liberal-arts LAC oriented. :)

Tell us what else you want in a school…

big campus
small/med campus (less than 10k undergrads)
quiet campus
rah rah big sports to watch
greek systems as an option
Catholic schools ok?
single sex
co-ed 50/50 split
rural setting
big city setting
collegetown/suburban setting
nice dorms
recreation availability
warm weather
cold/snowy weather
regional preference
is regional preference a requirement?

It doesn’t matter to me. The upper midwest is preferable. Just a nice program is what I’m looking for at this point. I’m just brainstorming ideas at this point. Don’t want to rule out anything at this point. Anything in the North is good too.

My son had an informal meeting with the head of the U MN honors program. He said that last year the average ACT for honors admission was 32 and the mean GPA was 3.8 I think it also depends on which program you are interested in. For example the engineering program is more difficult to get into because of competition and limited enrollment.

The U of Wisconsin Madison also has an honors program.

UWisconsin is a possibility, but will likely need a higher ACT. Yes, it does have some ACT 30/29, but those are often URMs or other special admits.

The top 25% of freshmen at UW-M have an ACT 31+, so it’s reasonable to think that those selected for the honors program are going to be from THAT group - (again, unless special circumstances or the desire to have more diversity in honors)

If this student isn’t a URM or special admit, he’s going to likely need a higher ACT for UW-M honors. Admission is not guaranteed for specific stats.
